Olympic bid - Bothered / Not bothered ?

edited July 2005 in Chit chat
I think it could be good for the UK, would generate a ton of jobs, create a ton of money because of the influx of people coming here to watch the Olympics spending money, eg restaurants, site seeing, shops etc.

If we do it right like other countries and Manchester did with the Commonwealth games it can be a great plus. The UK did great with Euro 96 years ago.

My only concern is that if we do another 'millenium dome' and totally mess it up, Greece i heard this morning have 25 years of paying more taxes to help pay for their Olympics.

On the other hand we might not even get it and in usual World Cup/Euro style we'll lose out in the semi final (final round). At least we'll lose to France not Germany (dunno whats worse).

The ace up the sleeve of the British Olympic bid is the proposal to add golf as an Olympic sport (yeah I know...) but St Andrews have already said they can use their course if London wins the Olympic bid (yeah I know that St Andrews isn't exactly in London, but they're talking about having events all over Britain aren't they?). Paris meanwhile has no golf course that's given permission.

Isnt Beach Volleyball an Olympic sport ? Or just normal volleyball ?

I bet its gonna rain like anything the summer of 2012 in England though !

Beach Volleyball IS an Olympic sport, not quite the same in rainy ole London tho...

It would be great if we get the Olympics, we would do a MUCH better job than the frogs!!!

Probably get someone like Les Dennis or Graham Norton to put the torch onto the Olympic flame or something

The opening ceremony could be a site to watch ! Probably have pop idol rejects singing the anthem
  • edited July 2005
Well i must admit the atmosphere on tv etc was quite exciting !

Plus to beat France at anything is superb. Seeing the looks on that french crowd was entertaining !

I'd watch if Les Dennis put the torch to Graham Norton.

I couldn't give a monkeys about winning ( apart from beating the French, instead of seeing the British celebrating wish we could have seen the French crying LOL ) All that will happen is London will get the chance to revitalise any remaining derilict land and be left with lots of new stadium and facilities and the rest of Britain will still carry on as before.

For all those that haven't notice. London HAS won the Olympic bid and will hold the Olympics in 2012.

    Yay us!

So.... Only a year late, with the develpment, way over the buget, with the fatcats taking 70% of the profits, we proudly welcome everyone to the 2013 UK Olympics, with your special presenter for the night, the Euro MP who won them for you the Right honouranle (bastard) Tony "Grin" Blurgh.

Being the UK, we are allowed to introduce a new event for this event.

Give a warm warm welcome to the craze which is still sweeping the world... Happy Slapping.

Non descript chav 1: Yeah, roight, we`re gonna win dis one roight, yeah, innit.

chav 2: *snort* Yeah, roight *sniff*

This is gonna be really wierd...

How is anyone going to easily tell the difference between genuine atheletes, and JJB Sports / white trainer clad Kappa Slappers ?

Sometimes you just DON'T HAVE TIME to see if they have nicotine stained fingers or a signing on card sticking out of their back pocket.

Surprised at your response. Theres going to be a fair few events held outside of London, i'm sure when say Toronto had the Olympics people in Vancouver werent moaning about it or when Atlanta had the Olympics people in Seattle werent going on about how it was all over there etc.

Either way the companies who are doing the building etc, a fair few of these might be northern companies or a UK company as a whole so that means they get a lot more work, their workers (cant tell me theyre all southern) get more work, more overtime.

It does benefit all, when the Olympic games go to a city it normally is a capital city or a large city. I hope Birmingham and Manchester get a fair few events but its no surprise of course London will get most of it.

If ran properly the Olympics will bring a ton of money into the country, yeah fat cats will get a fair bit but so many hotels in London will get money and other cities. If a tourist comes over for the Olympics they'll want to see other cities i presume and spend money there.

Share prices went up for a few companies so everyone who had shares for those companies benefited. Bit of a blinkered view just to think that only London will do well out of it. Like i say if ran properly the UK can make a lot of money out of it, 'if' they screw up like Greece did then yeah we should all moan as we'll be paying the debts for the next 20 years.

Cardiff will be hosting football in the Millennium Stadium. Newport could be hosting cycling in the Velodrome. The Menai Strait in North Wales will be hosting watersport events. St Andrews in Scotland will potentially be holding Olympic Golf.

I'm sure that there will be other events happening around Britain.

By the way... I am all up for the Olympics - I'm in training for the new Target Renegade event - hope I get the gold! Seriously though I think this is a huge boost for British sport.

I presume 80% or more of the events will be held in London but either way a lot of money will still be spent in other cities. I mean x thousand people will go to Wales to watch the football or cycling, they all have to stay somewhere, buy meals, buy local touristy things etc.

Same for many other events held round the country. Just a shame people seem to think that only the cockneys will do out of it, i think the country as a whole will do well.

I heard about it on the radio about two hours ago. It's really horrific. I wonder who's behind it?

    Necros.
  • edited July 2005
    Well one guess really.

Sounds very bad though, a few bombs on the trains and also the buses. Obviously get the full details later tonight.

I'm off to London saturday, think i will drive though.
  • I was hoping the Frogs would get it.
I could'nt give a monkeys **** if the olympics are on here or elsewhere.
Like we really need to **** all our hard earned cash away on that crap, we have no spare cash as it is and to think we will make money out of this project is blind folly.
    Millenium Dome anyone?

(I've just taken up political correctness again)

    Glad your so pro-Olympics !!!

If done right the country can make a lot of money from it, as said earlier hotels and many other places can make money.

If we dont spend it on the Olympics we're just gonna waste it on single mothers or other spongers. I'm glad the moneys being spent on that.

As for making money its not blind folly, 7 out of the last 8 countries who have hosted the Olympics have made money, Greece the exception.

I was reading earlier that America along with 50 other countries boycotted the 1980 Olympics because they were held in Moscow and Russia had just invaded Afghanistan.

Then in 1984, Russia didn't send anyone to the Los Angeles Olympics as a result.

    Is that true?

Yes, the Soviets boycotted the LA games on "security grounds", but it was just a ti-for-tat boycott, after the US stayed away from the 1980 Moscow games.

It was about this time that the World Athletics Championships started, and many people thought the Olympics wouldn't survive, with the boycotts and that.
