Sable Wurf (?)

edited July 2005 in Games
I was just playing Sabre Wulf and for once I actually got places in the game. If this keeps up, I may eventually complete the game.

Well, stranger things have happened. For instance, I remember this one time where Foggy got a rabbit confused with a sundial.

I completed Sabre Wulf eventually, back in the 80s, on a real Speccy, without cheating with pokes or anything. I didn't get the option to cheat with pokes anyway, because I owned They Sold A Million and Ocean had added the dreaded Speedlock to the loader (all the pokes in Crash etc were for the original release - I had the same problem with JSW too).

It was one of the few games I liked so much that I stuck with it, because the end always seemed just about within grasp (unlike JSW which I knew I'd never get close to completing, even though I wasn't aware of the infamous bugs at that time).

Seeing those caves that I had to ultimate-ly (oho!) reach so early on, by the 2nd screen, so near yet so far, gave me a strong desire to persist until I got there.

Also, a schoolpal had completed it (dunno if he used pokes or not), and I asked him what it looked like in that final cave, and he explained about the "witchdoctor" guarding the exit and so on, and of course I had an overwhelming desire to see that fabled screen with my own eyes, as I could only try and imagine it at this stage. :)

Eventually, with a fair bit of luck, I made it to the end. As far as Spectrum games go, it was probably my best achievement ever. It certainly felt like it at the time anyway. So, to this day I consider Sabre Wulf my favourite Ultimate game. Sure, Knight Lore was technically pioneering, but I never felt I had a chance of completing it so it never held the same appeal to me.

I found knight lore much easier to complete than Sabre Wulf. In fact I could pretty much complete KL at will...never finished Sabre Wulf though.

once my friend told me ?bout the game of man struggling for his freedom against the faith that is turning him every midnight into a wolf...
man, this was so seductive and tempting vision - I just shaked from desire to see, have and play the game ... never happend
I imagined the game so hardly... this should be the one I?ll love, the idea is perfect,oh!

Can you imagine the disappointment after the 20 years (!!!) when I finally saw the game titled ?KnightLore? - this must be it!!! and found it looks (of course) different, but what is worse - isometric!
:D sorry I?m not keen on isogames, I almost hate them, can?t help myself... they?re like the same.

i know its mentioned above but the caves on the second screen (top half) of sabre wulf certainly drove me on to play the game to its max. Id rate it as either the best or 2nd best ultimate game , i remember a lot of my pals at the time compared it unfavourably to atic atac as they didnt like the instant death compared to atic atacs health level , but i bloody loved it.

I admit that last year I did complete it with pokes because I wanted to see the ending. I've always found it quite difficult unlike Atic Atac which is really easy. I've also discovered that Sabre Wulf is easier to play using the keyboard (I've nearly always used the joystick - which I found less responsive).

Cookie is one game I've always found insanely difficult. I could never get anywhere in that game. It was impossible to get the ingredients or the rubbish to go where they were supposed to.

Now Pssst was always much easier, at least to me, even though I've never completed it. At least I succeeded in getting a good bit into the game. I could never even get off the first level in Cookie.

I haven't played it for years, but I do remember completing it several times. I think you could position yourself just above the dustbins to the far right of the screen and fire up. For the first few levels you hit the ingredients with flour bags as soon as they leave the drawer, they would then 90% of the time fall into the bowl before the flour disappeared. All you had to look out for was the dustbin meanie throwing rubbish and taking care not to hit it into the bowl.

This worked up until about the last two levels where the drawers were so low on the screen the position method didn't work. It was pretty difficult to finish those levels.
