Cheapo VR solutions
I just received a VRBOX I got on Ebay for $16 (with bluetooth controller)....one of these.

You put your phone in it.
I'd never actually used VR at all so figured it would be ok as an intro for it. Was quite impressed for the $16 it cost. Not perfect of course but pretty good for the price! Very dependent on the apps you use too, some were far better than others...the controller is pretty crappy...instructions suck and it's really a case of some apps work with it and some don't...overall though if you are wanting to try VR and haven't before it's worth the $16.
Anyone have one of these and have some app recommendations for it?

Plus the word "cardboard" in the description kind of makes me think whoa!?
But I suppose for that price it could be worth getting one for a bit of a laugh, just how dodgy is it exactly?
The term "cardboard VR" is actually a legitimate (low) tech from google to bring VR to the masses. The idea is to distill the VR experience to its cheapest usable form - a pair of lenses in a box to be used with your phone. Anyone can build a cardboard VR using the specification Google lists on its site, which is why there are tons of people selling cheap VR boxes for phones on the Net. The term "cardboard" is usually used by the said folks to indicate that it's based on the Google Cardboard specification. Of course, the product itself could be made of cardboard but I've seen plastic versions as well (Plastic cardboard? Go figure!). Frankly, the couple of plastic versions I've seen are low quality too.
The best VR implementation based on phone technology I've seen so far is the Gear VR from Samsung (based on Oculus tech). The headset is made of premium parts and the VR experience is quite good. Unfortunately, it only works with Samsung S7 and above.

Dunny brought his to the recent Carlisle meet and I was well impressed with it. Minecraft is awesome, as is watching a movie on a cinema screen, on the moon.
It works with the Samsung S6 too, which is what Dunny has.
"Cardboard" is what google made, these are plastic and better made as the lenses in them are adjustable. For the price they are awesome.
Been playing around a lot with it this weekend.
The "A time in space" 1 and 2 apps are cool and work really well/are very immersive (though too short). Obviously not up to the $800 HTC Vive but it gives you a taste of VR if you've not had it before (which I had not).
Works much better than I expected...can't argue for $15!

oh works with Youtube too on videos that support google carboard/VR
