hotmail/gmail question

are Hotmail and gmail accounts automatically synched/connected/linked or whatever? just logged into my Hotmail account and got a page about needing to keep security updated in case of a problem etc, then underneath my gmail address was printed, on its own.

only reason I have a gmail account is cause I needed one to set my phone up (and more recently I think you need one to have a youtube account so its used for that too). don't use it for anything else, and definitely never tried to connect it with my hotmail. - and it's not the just the same name as my Hotmail account but with 'gmail.com' written after it either.

interested to know how/why Hotmail would randomly know my gmail account details?

Hi, when you setup Hotmail / Outlook it will normally ask for a backup email address in case you forget your password. Did you use your gmail address for this?

good thinking but no, I've had my Hotmail account since early 2000s and only had a gmail one since about 3 years ago... definitely never connected or synched them in any way that Im aware of. (wouldn't even know how to)

  • I'm mystified then sorry. I have linked my LinkedIn account to Outlook.com but that has the same email. Will you let us know when you solve it? Cheers.

yeah, thanks for the help though

cant work out why my gmail address was just written on the Hotmail security page, for no reason. it wasn't even a hotlink or anything...had no context.

stuff like this does my head in , lol

you do get prompts the odd times from such things. some webmail providers are forever getting attacked / compremised

it depends on the thing you have (pc or phone etc) and if you set it up as such. like android stuff gets more gmail users no doubt.. but there is an option to also get hotmail /outlook emails in settings (add account) . but an older phone had gmail *AND* an email icon and you could set both things up, think they got rid of the email one when they updated it.

if it's on a pc , I have the option in Live mail to show which account I send it "from" for my hotmail email that or the ISP one etc.

you can also set it to just read the emails (e.g. tablet etc) .. and only when your pc access's it , will it remove it from the mail server.

I'm having proper nightmares with ilok crud at the moment blocking me from using software I bought.. so yer, least you didn't have this crud with 8 bit machines ;-)

  • yeah its all just got way too fussy imo, too much bulls***.

going online these days is a bit like stepping into some kind of task on the crystal maze.

never clicked any 'add account' buttons btw. oh well........
  • If you log into outlook.com then click on the cog which is at the top of the screen to the left of the question mark. When you click on the cog it brings up a menu which includes connected accounts. Is the gmail there?
  • on my mobile atm, cant see any cog icon in outlook so Ill try it on my laptop later

--- but now Ive just seen something else weird is happening. the last couple of emails I replied to (in outlook) have now turned up in my in box, addressed to myself, from myself?

no idea whats going on lol
  • hit the cog icon and there are no connected accounts listed.

there is an option to connect gmail or 'other' email accounts but the list of ones actually connected to my outlook account is empty. doesn't make sense.

    cheers for the help
  • If you added a Hotmail account to your Android phone, it may have "helpfully" linked them for you.
  • When you created your Google account it would have asked you for an account recovery email address...

yep this is probably it, thanks... just checked and my gmail does have my Hotmail account connected as a back up. I should've tried that earlier, cause its basically the opposite of what jonseypeter suggested

still begs the question how does Hotmail know my gmail, because according to the above it should only be gmail that knows my Hotmail? too bloody confusing, cant be bothered any more ~X(

    thanks for the helps.

What exactly was the message? Are you sure it wasn't an email from Google?

nah it was a screen I was auto-redirected to after logging in to Hotmail (outlook). it does it every now and then, definitely a Hotmail 'security' thing... just had my gmail address printed on its own after the main text, for no apparent reason

Chances are that, at some point, either gmail suggested updating your Hotmail to set your gmail account as it's backup, or that you got one of those occasional hotmail security review screens which suggested you should set up a secondary address/mobile number for security and you put in your gmail address. Or you were using a gmail address for something like xbox Live or Skype and then opted to link the accounts.

yeah but my Hotmail says it has no other connected/linked email accounts, and I don't ever remember being prompted to do that either.

don't use xbox/Skype or anything else that would've linked them. so yeah it's confusing but I guess that's how it goes? what Im now more concerned with is why emails I'm replying to in Hotmail are coming back to my inbox, saying they're from me. I'm not sure if the person I'm replying to has got them.
