Is album artwork dead?

I was in Morrisons last week when I thought I'd look at the CD top 50 and I noticed how bland all the covers were. None really caught my eye.
When you look at LP covers from the 60's through to the 80's many are now classics with eye catching covers and a lot of thought put into them but these days hardly any thought seems to go into a CD cover. Maybe it's a sign of the times but it's quite sad that it seems to have died out now.

Vinyl is selling better than CDs these days...(or is close to) so the album art is probably going to make a resurgence too.

  • Isn't the album art why people buy vinyl in the first place? They put it on their wall to look at while they listen to the music using the download code ;)

if thats basically comprised of x factor rejects, boybands, lame commercial rnb/rap, and various 'best of' compilations by housewives favourites then I think ive identified the problem ...

tbh I think there have always been bland forgettable album covers, as well as the odd few great ones
  • I bought an LP by Nasty Savage based on the cover, and it's probably one of the worst LP's I've got!! I should have realised when the vocalist was a failed american wrestler called Nasty Ronny!!!

The artwork is abysmal and I still, to this day, have no idea why I parted with my hard earned YTS cash to get it!!
    Sausages is more important
  • rick Astleys got a new album. really pushing the envelope with that cover

is that 50 as in page 50 of the debenhams catalogue, mens autumn range ?
  • I used to look forward to new Pearl Jam albums, partly just to see the photo's, drawings etc that they put in - it was worthwhile back then... especially Vitalogy, IMHO the album artwork is better than the damn music!

I kinda miss collecting vinyl though, even just finding a translucent coloured LP is cool. Nowadays it's all done by computer and has very little soul - I think people my age might feel the same way, bring back collectable music, make it mean something to own an album again... aren't music producers and artists sick to **** death of Apple already! - music from your favourite bands should be something you look forward to, and actually own. Us 40-somethings who spent a lot of money on music in the 90's miss that time, and we sometimes even have disposable income, lets start calling the shots!
  • **** NO
