Another clue is bugging me, I've stumble across it but I'm not sure I understand the reason.
With regards to the 'foil' object:
Spoiler:
I've placed the Foil in the gallery to solve the clue '4T'.
The only reason I can think of the link is that 4T is an equation and you solve it by using the FOIL method.
Is that it, or is it something much simpler and more obvious?
seems unlikely if you look at the M, N, and H font character in street names. The H is very clearly an H. The N and M are less clear due to the narrow width. (So unclear that Oliver Frey's map shows Herne Hill as Herme Hill).
If this is the case (just a possibility), can anyone find a fit for NR or MR for hammer?
Mjölnir maybe? Although certainly not irish mythology, neither is 4T oil :)
TNN was one of the first games I bought (thanks to my Gran) when I was about 12. To be honest, I enjoyed walking about and marvelled at the animation but I found it way too hard and didn't even have a go at completing it when I had the map.
DD was a superior game, IMO, as it allowed a bit more of a sandbox approach. I loved the NPCs, shops and the way that day and night was represented. I didn't complete it but I did get quite far after the map and solution was published.
Marsport was another great game. I think I preferred DD but, ironically, played Marsport for longer and almost completed it (via the solution).
I loved these types of game and DD, along with Dragontorc and Doomdark's Revenge would easily be in my all time top 10.
I did. I wrote a bit on HOTM for the post above but thought I was getting a bit off topic with it so I deleted it. For HOTM, I was just about getting to the point of being mature enough to stick at completing a game/not having too many games to play by the time it was released so I persevered with this game. I really liked it but I didn't view it with the wonder that I did with DD.
Other games that I liked at this time was Sorderon's Shadow (never had a clue what was going on) and Runestone (loved the way you could sail ships). I always looked forward to Eye of the Moon and tried Dark Sceptre but didn't really get on with it for some reason.
Getting back to the subject, Gargoyle were a great developer with innovative games that were quirky and imaginative.
I can imagine. What in particular do you consider advanced about it?
I've recently liked looking at Your Sinclair etc for the hacking column that talked about game code (I used to read Crash at the time which wasn't bad but, in hindsight, I wished I'd have looked at YS earlier) and I found it really interesting in discovering that games may have been written badly or well (not something I considered at the time - I was more interested in the playability/scope/design) and/or by a single person or multiple developers (e.g. where common routines were repeated by >1 person but not removed).
To be honest, what amazed me (and still does) as an embedded developer myself, is just how quickly these guys (and others) turned around such high quality games without all the tools and IDE environments that we have these days.

But I've not yet got past the jail alphabet lock, nor solved Hail Parthol.
NOT asking for help, gentlemen. Just pity.
I had a head start as I played it to death in the 80s.

Have you tried Heavy on the magick ?

Nicely done!
The clue for solving Hail Parthol is one of the best ones in any of the GG games. Also one of the most time consuming.
I shall say no more ... :-)
Thanks, gonna put together a proper solution to compliment my TNN one.(which I think needs some tweaks as well).

I have mentioned a few playing tips on this thread.
Also, if you press 6 (menu) inside a room, when you return to the game, the room changes colour to yellow.
