Glitches, tricks, and sequence breaking in Spectrum games?

  • Holding down symbol shift enabled you to walk through walls in Gauntlet. Not sure if it worked in Gauntlet II (or Deeper Dungeons?).

  • The Head Over Heels jump/swap glitch which allowed you to pair them up in the first screen was a pretty well known one back in the day.
  • Ghostbusters had a trick whereby you put in a certain code and got a free vehicle - but it was invisible and awful.
  • Couldn't you complete Fist 1, or at least get really far into it, by only performing the crouching punch?

Similarly the sweep kick in Yie Ar Kung Fu.

Human Killing Machine could be completed with one move too, couldn't it?

I guess these are less exploiting glitches than just the limitations of 8-bit fighting games.

Great Escape, build energy back up by picking up, wearing, dropping the guard uniform over and over.

There was also the Elite glitch at the start, when pressing Y to load a Commander and then saving instead gives you lots and lots of money, and puts you in a different galaxy.

Kokatoni Wilf I remember rubbing my dusting cloth over the keyboard a few times to clean the keys, and the message came up congratulating you for completing the game, you had to send the message to Elite to stand a chance of winning a prize. I still have the letter they sent me back somewhere !

Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

    =))
    Heavy on the disasm
  • I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the infamous "do" command in early versions of The Hobbit. Also in Enduro Racer pressing the CAPS SHIFT key makes your bike shoot through the first three sections at super speed.

I have found the letter from Elite saying that their programmers had not even been able to complete the game yet and congratulated me in completing it !

Then they dropped the bombshell that not only did you have to complete the game, but you had to be one of the first five people to get a letter printed in a computer magazine Praising the game !

The prize, the chance to meet Lee Majors when he came to the UK to promote the launch of Elites " Fall Guy " game.

A prize NOT worth winning, no freebies, autographs, holidays, NADA !

  • Lee Majors is perhaps my only man crush. When I was a kid, he was THE man. He looked manly, he was the bionic man, and he shacked up with Farrah Fawcett, He was a hero in my eyes. Shame the game wasn't so great, but I played it a lot anyway.
  • Street Fighter you could complete the whole game almost with just doing the low sweep kick. Only the final boss Sagat was a problem.

To be fair that was a problem with the arcade as well :))

So it was quite a good conversion really :D
    Every night is curry night!
  • In Sim City you could set the tax to 20% in Dec and then 0 in Jan to attract new population and it would always give you a nice boost of money and people, every year.
  • In Exploding Fist,

From Dan 2 onwards, knock you opponent down from behind, then quickly perform a backward high kick, if your hand touches their foot it flips them over onto their back for more points and more ying-yang.

Beginer and Dan 1 always turn round when your behind them.
  • Both the hand-to-hand in Way Of The Tiger, and Highlander, both had continuous unstoppable moves. In WOTT, it was a high kick followed by a spin and then another high kick. In Highlander you just crouched down on the edge of the screen and kept swiping your sword. Not at all in the spirit of decapitation is all.
