Highway Encounter ST

edited January 2010 in Games
Hi everyone.

I have got a copy of Highway Encounter for the Atari ST (made by the late Mark Haigh-Hutchinson and graphics by Costa Panayi). It was given to me by a source that doesn't want to be named and he promised Mark 10 years ago that he would not release it to the public back then. I would really REALLY like to see it released now, so I thought I would ask Costa about the permission since he is the author of the original game on the ZX Spectrum. Unfortunetly so far I was not able to find his email address or any contact address and thought it would be the best to ask here if anyone knows what his email address is. It would be a shame if this GREAT conversion of one of the classic ZX Spectrum games would be lost...

Some screenshots for your pleasure:

    Wow! Nice screenshots!

As for the e-mail of Costa Panayi, there's an old thread where MartynC was looking for it. I think you must ask him.

Ohh, I love the look of that. I'd love to play it so I hope you can get the permission to release it.

It's interresting that Mark was against releasing the game as he seemed very supportive of WoS and generous with the Vortex releases - there's a file in the archive with all the Vortex games in it that, as I understand it, is compiled by him. The readme file, by him, mentions that he would like to, eventually, release the source code to their games as well. Sadly, that never happened. :(

Yes, it seems that only 8-bit releases were meant to be freely distributable back then (this is more than 10 years ago). I am sure he would probably give us a go-ahead now if he was still around, but unfortunetly we don't have anything like that in our hands now, and we have to try getting some kind of permission from other people, since the source explicitly says he denied distribution back then.

A LOT of music (esp. Dance) was made on ST's in the 90's.. so yer it excelled at midi , sequencing.. only reason I owned one :)

    if it's the FULL final game, it's a pity it's locked away.hhmm

Tom-cat.. Luke is Costa's Brother In Law, (or was) according to wiki and some other sources sooo it should make things a bit easier.

Ooh, you, I did my Uni jet-engine design project on my ST. Mind you, the time I wasted playing Rodland and trying to convert I,Robot was probably what robbed me of a 2:1. :D

Its supposed to be the FULL game (all 30 screens + end sequence) altough it says DEMO version on the menu. I did come to around half so far - it is faster than the original and has some random nasties which you can't kill and are in your way (turning you around and stuff) - so it is harder.

I sent an email to Costa (found him also on Linkedin)... we will see what comes of this.

Definetly seems to be the full version since in demo mode you get to the final 0 sector... here are some screens from the demo mode:

And... We have PERMISSION from the man himself :

    "
    Hi Tomaz

    Thanks for your kind words.
As long as the Atari ST version is made available free of charge as stated below, then you have my permission to release it.

    Best regards
    Costa

So, without prolonging this any further, you can download the game from the following address:

Well, I forgot to mention one important thing for all Highway Encounter/Alien Highway fans - this version also includes a full editor :)

Is there a good ST emulator for Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) that anyone could recommend? ;) Used Steem in the olden days of PC ownership incidentally, it's a very good emu.

I'd like to see a Sega Genesis / Megadrive conversion of Highway Encounter :) Just for fun.

If you liked Highway Encounter and Alien Highway then you might also like Necropolys Encounter. It's loosely based on those two titles that I played through many nights on the ZX Spectrum way back when.

    Looks bad, really bad....

    Every night is curry night!
  • Looks bad, really bad....
You get a promo code for the platform of your choice if you explain why it looks "really bad" :)

  • Am I missing something? ...this "Necropolys Encounter" looks like Highway Encounter about as much as Pac Man looks like Modern Warfare.

  • It's not a remake, just "loosely based on".
  • "loosely" being the important bit, I guess?
I just watched a couple of videos of the game - and there's nothing wrong with "the tech" - that's fine and all...but it looks beyond boring and about as soulless as kelp. I wouldn't play it even if I was paid to.

  • Sokurah, I'm sorry that you didn't like the screenshots and videos. You say they're boring but maybe it's just my being unable to capture the "right" shots. Anyway, I wasn't planning on paying anyone to play through this game :) Cheers!
