Cleaning the flat

  • Glad to see you've already cleaned the flat, at last! Too much grime since feb 2015! 8-}
  • It's not clean, I gave up... :P
  • I bought a new hoover last week. A Shark upright, but you can take the cylinder off the floor sweeper part and use it with a hose and attachment, for the stairs.

It's so powerful, it has pulled most of my carpets off the floor, even though they were tacked down. I tried the Air Ram thing and sent it back. It dies too quickly on full power. You get about 10 minutes before the suction starts dropping off.
  • Bicarb of soda will dissolve easily in warm urine.

  • I'm starting to worry about the health standards of the food you cook in 'What's in your saucer' thread... :-?
  • I heard that zx1's pizza started from food he'd dropped on his floor, which mutated... ;)
  • I'm in the mood to make a pizza, this may happen soon!
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • Just had a curry, me!
    Sod it!

  • Had a hoover nightmare today. My new Shark Lift Away is knackered. The floor sweeper part clogged up with hair, so I removed it, and tried to carry on with the lift away bit and a hose. Few seconds later, the smell of burning, and dead.

I took it apart, cleaned it all out like new. Put it back together on the floor sweeper. Powered on, cushty, its working, or so I thought. Did a bit of the landing and went into my bedroom. It proceeded to spew out everything I hoovered all over my bedroom in a big cloud. Arrrrrghhhhh.

Now, after 3 pints of Guiness and a couple of sambookas, I can see the funny side. But ffs, DO NOT BUY A SHARK!
  • Urgh... Guiness and sambuca..? :-&
  • ...Well I've moved flat now, the new one has carpets rather than wooden floors so I ended up buying a Miele vaccuum from Curry's.

It's quite flash - very powerful. It was advertised at less than half price, and I got some more £ off using an online discount voucher.

Gave it a quick try and it practically pulled the carpet up. Might need to tinker with the settings a bit.
  • My hoover stopped working properly yesterday, the spinning brush on the front has stopped spinning and the suction seems poor, perhaps a mouse has got into it.

After my plumbing success yesterday, I may try mending it, perhaps the fanbelt has gone. Although I intended fitting a new washer to the tap, I ended up fitting a new tap, the old one must have been there at least 50 years and there was no chance of repairing it, it was corroded and seized up, the whole job only took !/2 hour, but it would have cost a fortune to have someone else do it.
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........
  • Yeah, I bet it only took you 10 minutes to hoover out the drain... :))

    Beware when using the vacuum...

  • I think Henry has become a British insitution. We had Henries at school back in the 80s. They are still sold today, 30 years on - and guess what keeps our office carpets clean, yeah, another Henry!
  • My experience with a Henry is just the same as Chris said all that way back. "He" will snort up pretty much anything without getting clogged. lumps of plaster, screws, plane shavings, bits of brick... anything that's smaller in diameter than the tube basically. Also doesn't make horribly fiery burning smells when you suck up plaster/MDF dust like lesser vacuum cleaners.
  • That's because Henry hoovers are just shop vacs with cutesy stickers on them.

Everytime someone says Henry Hoover, someone at both Hoover and Numatic simultaneously have an aneurysm.
And yes, they are just an industrial vacuum cleaner. I've no experience with any other brands but I would indeed be surprised if the face improves the performance at all.
  • It is my Hoover fan belt that has gone, I aim to try and fit a new one myself, but sometimes they make home repairs difficult. I am on a DIY spree at the moment. New washbasin taps, New toilet cistern, new bath taps, and I am not even a plumber !

  • Probably at Numatic, but Hoover are probably basking in the glow of their brand being universally synonymous with all vacuum cleaners..
  • Not really, it's a nightmare for their trademark department. It's almost the poster child for a brand name becoming genericised. To the point a knock off brand of "hoovers" would probably stand a chance of getting away with it.
