A-bike

I hope this isn't too off-topic but this is Sinclair miscellaneous after all!

Has anyone here ever owned or ridden an A-bike? I impulse bought one off eBay yesterday in a moment of drunken idiocy (at least it was cheap) and wondered if anyone here had any thoughts on them (other than how much of an idiot I'll look riding it)

And secondly an apology for posting my first 3 threads all in the wrong place, won't happen again!

  • I think there has been a thread or two on here about drunken internet buys in the past !

    Happy biking !
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

    Predictable but funny !

I still want one, trouble is they are all collection only and very few work, I would have to push it home !

Haha I know, don't be a statistic guys!

I would honestly love a C5 but would have to get rid of some crap in the garage first!
  • I'm guessing you live in London then?

Let us know how you get on with it... :)

how did you come to that idea ? there are other places where people over do the shandy ya know ;)

a friend of an in-law often does drunken ebaying... he'll buy something, then his wife will give him dirty looks a few days later.. he bought a trombone or a trumpet before.. and it's apparently on his garden fence as an ornament now. the thread regarding it is probably on here from a few years back.

    :))

It was because from the video it seemed to be marketed at tube-travelling commuters...

nah they are all on the bromptons ;) (cockney rhyming slang.... not really) most people either take the tube or cycle.. it's the "out of london" folk who ram up the trains with bikes , then cycle the last 5 miles :) .

I used to cycle as a kid, but as an adult and the standard of driving / the amount of my car gets done to it... in London I'd not risk anything other than driving / bus or by foot. :)

certain roundabouts in london are like playing mario kart.. they have no clue what lane to be in.

I just bought a new dashcam, within 5 minutes of driving with it.. had this happen.. and yep it's the wrong side of the road.. (ah can't upload a pic)

Yup I'm struggling to think of a use for one outside London. Though I've only been a couple of times but it's not somewhere I'd want to cycle on a proper bike let alone one of these :))

Drunk me thought it'd be a good idea to keep it in the boot of my car and use it whenever I have to get somewhere through town/fancy an impromptu bike ride but sober me thinks it'll probably be going back on ebay unless it's much better at hills than I'm envisaging!

Roundabout users really ruffle my feathers, it's not hard staying in the same lane all the way round one. Having said that they are far better signposted in some places than others but in London there's no excuse!

  • It arrived today. It's actually great! I just don't know when I'll get chance to ride it but it's a very nice bit of kit. Doesn't take long to get used to at all.

Main stumbling block is that I really need to work on getting fit enough to ride it, I was buggered trying it out earlier on :))

It's the same in every city. If I were prime minister, one of the many changes I'd make would be to start a new, log term project to make everywhere properly cycle friendly. It might take a decade or more to introduce the proper cycle lanes everywhere, but in the long term it would be to the countries benefit, as it cycles damage the road much less than cars, cycles help keep you fit, cycles don't cause pollution, a drunk driver with a cycle is *much* less dangerous than the same moron with a car, etc.

As for the moment, I'd happily cycle to work (unless the weather was really bad) except for the fact that my working career would then be shorter than a suicide bomber's.
