The Young Ones (Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson, etc) - I never noticed that

Call me old Mr Unobservant, but I never noticed the recurring fifth housemate in The Young Ones:

  • I have the dvds of it, should look when I have time.. just thought it might be apocryphal story like the captain pugwash characters , that are commonly called something else.
  • I am sure when I saw mention of this before they speculated that the whole show was supposed to be some kind of trippy adventure in his mind.
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........
  • I have both series on DVD, i'll need to check this out when i have time.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • Oo

watched it nigh on 30 years, both tripping and straight and cant remember ever noticing LOL

  • This seems familiar, but maybe I imagined it?
    Every night is curry night!
  • Hehe, yeah I read the article when it first appeared! Remember seeing the other person in one episode, but didn't know they were there throughout the whole series! :)
  • This show just keeps giving. Now I've got an excuse to watch them again.
    Sod it!

On the subject of Mike, what does everyone think of him? Christopher Ryan (who plays Mike) has always been criticised by fans of the program for being rubbish at the part, but I don't agree. Yes, Mike is by far the least funny of the four, but that's down to the script, as it gave Mike very few funny lines, and I think Ryan did a good job of making Mike (mostly) the sane and responsible one. I don't think that any other comedian, given the same lines, would have make Mike much funnier.

  • Mike was meant to be the straight guy as such, so yes didnt get many funny lines

  • Big brother Matthew pointed the 'other' housemate out on one occassion. I remember we were slightly disturbed by this and never spoke of again.
  • I always thought Christopher Ryan played the part well. He was also great in Bottom, especially the Christmas one. (One or two potatoes?)
    Sod it!

Spud-gun and Dave Hedgehog were great - just the sort of grotty, under-achieving, no-hoper mates you'd expect with Eddie!

  • Difference was Christopher Ryan is a proper actor with previous TV and theatre experience unlike the others.
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

Also Mike was supposed to have been played by Peter Richardson so I believe. I think the BBC wanted the show to be a showcase for the Comic Strip, but he pulled out to write 'The Comic Strip Presents...' for Channel 4, so whether the script was originally written with him in mind and then altered when Chris Ryan was cast I don't know.
  • Was never a fan of Mike back in the day, but watching it years later I appreciate the character a lot more.
Ryan was actually great in the role.

Oh right. Peter Richardson is great, but I don't know how he'd have been as Mike.
  • I've started to rewatch them, starting with the first episode last night. The fifth lodger is there, as per picture in the episode.
    Sod it!

  • Similar to that guy Gene who lives in the closet in "Dude, where's my car?" Who just comes out and pisses in the plant, asks for his messages and says "see you tomorrow" - and Jesse and Chester each think he's the other's friend.
