Just had the weirdest power cut ever Oo

this morning i was posting Johnny Cash songs on google+, then i took the dog out. Came back noticed the downstairs lamp was flickering so thought it was knackered and turned it off.
Carried on posting Johnny Cash songs but then noticed the sound was really really fuzzy and distorted and the green light was dimmer than normal.
Unplugged the speakers and plugged into mi phone and still sounded **** so it must be the puter? Oo
Anyway fiddling with plugs and sockets here and there made no difference so i opened up the pc, second time since last night as last night the CMOS battery went so had to replace that :(
took out the soundcard, cleaned it, etc popped it back in, then.......nothing, no sound at all, switched the pc off and back on, nothing, no beep nothing.
Then i tried turning the bedroom light on, nothing, then noticed the bedside clock was off (yet strangely the wii and media player still had electric, plus the bedroom telly came on when i tried lol)
Tried the kitchen light and it was on, could see the bulb flicker abit but not lit as normal.

so i went to ask a neighbour and he'd phoned em, his was the same, said it was high voltage? and would be on about 12.30 ish.

weird, normally if its a powercut its a powercut, not a part powercut Oo great way to start my christmas break LOL

  • In my old house, the power lines were not 220 and neutral, but two phases of 127 volts. One day, a transformer blew up and my power dropped to 127 and 0 volts.

The computer shut down, but lights were dimmer and some devices still worked.
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!
  • High voltage or low voltage? If a phase goes out things that have a universal PSU designed for worldwide use (which the wii presumably is) would keep working, but things like PC speqkers with a 240V transformer would give low output and not work properly.
Have you got high winds up there? It's pretty blowy here in Lincs.

    ah
yeah very very windy here on the east coast. we always get powercuts, they are currently laying all the powerlines underground i believe, to try and stop some of the many powercuts

  • High voltage may refer to a problem with the high voltage network... which may mean that consumers/customers receive a lower than normal voltage.

As Guesser says, some electronic devices have wide range universal input power supply systems, these may continue to work with a reduced mains voltage. Some as low as 90V.

Meanwhile conventional and normal fixed input power supply systems and circuitry, including electrical equipment will either fail to work, or will work partly.

Tungsten light bulbs will burn a more yellow/orange colour with significantly reduced brightness. Other lighting may be less bright, may not restart if switched off and on again, or may flicker.

Step up to red alert. Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb!

  • I'm at work in Glasgow, it's calmer now but in the late morning the rain was well and truly bucketing down and the wind was rattling the windows here. Was thinking about moving from my seat as it's right next to a window.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • seems to have quietened down here now, mustve passed us into the north sea

  • I expect it was wind related issues, shorting out overhead 3 phase mains. We get that now and again here where the power doesn't just go out straight away if it's intermittent shorts. The circuit breakers open and close a few times or something before deciding there's a fault (or the fault clears) so you get buzzing and dimming of the lights for a few seconds, then either back to normal or a full power cut.
  • Alien invasion ? ;)
