BBC new idents

So BBC have changed their idents after all these years. The new ones are quite fun but not a stylish as the old ones. I thought maybe they were just for a few weeks over the new year, but they are here to stay as they 'show Britain's diversity'. What is the obsessions with diversity. Its all Will Smiths / Oscars fault. They started it.

We know who we are in this country and most of us are aware that we have a diverse and mixed population. That is what Britain is about, we don't need the BBC using it as a 'look how nice and PC we are' campaign. Those idents are going to get boring after a week :)

Whoops this was meant to be just a comment, not a rant. Sorry.
Sod it!

  • These new idents make up for the lack of decent programs on the BBC. Go on BBC, keep taking my money.

That is true, simply pointing a camera at some people doing aerobics seems more professional than the Saturday night crap that is on ;)
Sherlock was quite entertaining though. Doctor Who was the usual Xmas cheese. Be glad when Moffat pees of and let someone more decent to concentrate on some decent Who stories. Enjoyed Blankety-blank (ITV, I know), but seems wrong for it to take up a whole hour now there are adverts. Netflix is becoming one of main production companies. They are definately over-taking BBC for showing some class series.

What we need is a decent programme about 8-bit programming / game reviews and tips ;)

For the tips maybe we can get Nam Rood out of retirement :))

...and perhaps for the presenters we could have erm?....Andy Crane, and possibly Violet Berlin?

Maybe it's a political move to demonstrate the government and greater society the effects of the cutbacks the BBC have been forced to swallow.

Also, with current broadcasting technology the 2000's idents peaked visually. There is not much else to one can do. Those swimming Hippos were CGI and very realistic and quite beautiful. The possible ideas have not been contained by the technology for quite a little while. Technologically, there is nothing to top what they did in the 00s, they are out of ideas. All they have now is higher resolution. and possibles 4k.

I think the BBC should just go back to a spinning world and stop trying to turn idents in to a form of entertainment.

The referendum is over, and you lost, get over it. And most of the people who voted for Brexit did so to get away from a corrupt, undemocratic self-serving union, not because of any racist motives. But why is it, that to people like you, if a black Englishmen is worried about an immigrant taking his job, then he's right to be concerned about his future, he has to think first of his family and their well-being. He's just being reasonably concerned, with no prejudice or intended malice.

But if a white Englishman is worried about an immigrant taking his job, then to self-deluded people like you, he's a Nazi. He hates anyone who isn't white, heterosexual, and English all the way back to the battle of Hastings. He no doubt chainsaws kittens, and takes his pitbulls to organised dog-fights.

Mel, look around you. Most English people are not racist, and whilst uncontrolled immigration was (rightly) part of the reason why thinking people voted to Leave (instead of unthinkingly voting to Stay because dozens of multi-millionaires gave us vague predictions about the financial meltdown and (literally!) war if we left) most of us did so because we wanted to leave an organisation that has somehow managed to 'lose' literally countless billions of Euros and refuses every request to be audited and investigated. The EU is drowning in corruption, and if you'd look at the facts, instead of following the "All Brexisters are racist" drivel fed to people like you by the filthy rich who have a vested interest in staying in such a corrupt and immoral union, then you'd see that Brexit was maybe, just maybe the right decision. And even if Brexit turns out to be bad for Britain, then it was still motivated mostly by people wanted to leave the EU for good reasons, and not because of racism or some brain-dead Engish-only hatred. We wanted to be free of corruption, and whilst we're still stuck with the British government, at least we can vote them out when the election comes, whereas we don't get to vote on who runs the EU.

Granted, Labour aren't exactly beacons of honesty or altruism, and in point of fact every political party in Britain is no doubt self-serving and cares much less about the public than it does about it's own members, but even if every British party is partially scum, then we can still vote for the least worst.

And quite a few immigrants actually voted for Brexit, despite what you might want to think. Not that I expect people like you to admit that. And tell me something, Mel. Why is it that people like you say that Brexit was motivated by racism, but you remained quiet over the Scottish referendum? I didn't see one person saying that the Scots who voted to leave Britain were racist, yet you use every opportunity to point out the racism that (in your mind) motivated all Brexiters.

To me, that's just hypocrisy on your part. But prove me wrong, Mel. Go on, link me to some posts where you criticise the Scots' Leave vote as being motivated by small minded, unjustified, bigoted racism. Go on, it won't take long, given how fair minded and egalitarian you are. Show me the dozens of posts where you call the Scottish Leave voters "English hating racist idiots". You've presumably mentioned that at the slightest opportunity, as you did with Brexit in this thread?

    But somehow I doubt it.

Now can people like you stop dragging Brexit in to every post whenever you want to (a) make a point about racism, or (b) want to sneer about people who dare to have a different opinion than you? The vote is over, Brexit is going to happen, and neither side of the voters will convince the only side to see things their way, so let's drop the subject once and for all.

Oh, for ****s sake. Common sense won the referendum, get over it. Most of the people who voted for Brexit did so to get away from a corrupt, undemocratic self-serving union, not because of any racist motives. Oh, and quite a few immigrants actually voted for Brexit, despite what you might want to think. Not that I expect people like you to want to see that. Remember the Scottish referendum? Hypocrites like you were strangely silent when it came to the (few) racist Scots who voted to leave Britain because of their racism. No, you didn't mention that because to people like you, only the English can be racist.

But prove me wrong, Mel. Go on, link me to some posts where you criticise the Scots' Leave vote as being motivated by small minded, unjustified, bigoted racism. Go on, it won't take long, given how fair minded and egalitarian you are.

its not about common sense, its about the general population slowly turning right wing. first we had 9/11, then in 2008? we had the banking crisis and following recession etc. then together with the large terrorist attacks and the massive immigration crisis has slowly turned peoples tolerances.
This always happens when things turn bad, look at the 30s. people when their lot disappears they always turn to blame others. look at Brexit, Trump getting elected, National front in France coming close to being elected, theres also other far right parties in other countries are gaining.
As for the EU i just dont understand this taking Britain back from the corrupt EU leaders etc, what about other countries, whys it just us? why are we special? we're acting like a petulant child spitting out the dummy.

by the way who mentioned brexiters being racist? i dont think i did, i called them idiots, to me its idiocy to jump into a large black hole based on lies, we STILL dont know whats going to happen, let alone back then. i said then and ill say it again cutting your nose off to spite your face springs to mind.
Its also truth that along with the EU immigration was a large swing, like i said above, people ignore and dont want to hear that we are a diverse country which is built on immigration.

  • Eh so about them idents then. Which one of yours was a favorite. For me it was the mechanical mirror globe one that came the second half of the 80s until I think about mid 1981.

I did not like the twin strip one that replaced it, it seems less formal and well polished.

Fair enough. On topic, I didn't see the point of the Hippos. I'd rather they showed older sequences from years gone by, it would be interesting to see them.

Or why can't the BBC have a competition, open to everyone, asking for fifteen seconds long animations that sum up the BBC? Some of the videos people would send it could be fantastic.

They done a competition on Blue Peter, back in 1987 ish to design and program an animation on their home computer. The winners got Amiga and their animation reprogrammed on a state of the art BBC model B and shown during Childrens BBC.
One of the winning animations was a spider falling onto a dynamite plunger and exploding the screen.

  • You would have thought that in 1987, a BBC model B would still be a viable prize as a computer, though I'm pretty sure the winner would have preferred an Amiga.

It's better than the new BBC idents. Maybe that's it, the BBC need a rotating wooden shed with the letters BBC crudely painted on one side.

That's a Commodore shed, that is - the clue being that it's brown. The Spectrum colours on it are there to fool people into thinking it's respectable.

And who's put that grey and black thing on the roof, set up to fall on the head of anyone opening the door?

What a silly, silly comment to make.
  • Welcome to the Internet, where anyone who has a different opinion to you is an idiot.
  • Welcome to the Internet, where anyone who has a different opinion to you is an idiot.

But some statements or opinions are idiotic, as in the case of what Retrobrothers quoted. Not only is it wrong and insulting to all rational, intelligent Brexit voters, but the idiocy that flowed through those two quoted sentences even gave rise to a double negative:

" i dont think the general population dont want to actually think about it"

which reduces to " i think the general population want to actually think about it", which is the opposite of what was meant. Hopefully Mel was drunk or something when he posted it, but whatever the reason, there was so much wrong with that post.

Still, we've all posted things we regret (and if you slag off work or your boss, don't also post details of where you work, something I'm careful to remember!) so let's move on and forget about it. And try to forget about the new Jonathan Creek episode from a few days back, it was *terrible*. Granted it's not been great since Gorgon's Wood (I think that was the last episode), and the ones with Sheridan Smith weren't too good, but since it came back with Creek married (and no longer either a mgaician's assistant or living in a windmill) it's been awful. Rubbish and contrived mysteries that made littler sense, no humour, no likeability, etc.

A once fantastic program that's fallen farther than even Red Dwarf did (and it takes some doing, to beat Red Dwarf in the drop-in-quality stakes).
