Six months notice is quite generous, though still never good news. In an old job in the dot com days my company got a big cash injection, and our salaries jumped up 50%. We were given talks about how the struggling dark days were over, and the future was secure. So I bought myself a house with a 100% mortgage. Then a month later, the day after my first mortgage payment, I was made redundant. That was a crappy time. I swore all the way out of the door. :(
Sorry to hear that. Recruitment in the IT sector does in general seem to be quite active at the moment. I'm getting loads of emails with job details from agencies I registered with ages ago. Might be worthwhile registering with some if you're not already?

The reason I get paid for as long as I do is because of my seniority with the company.
...and because now that half of the company has been sold off there's a lot of practical stuff to be done in relation to that, so my boss wants to be sure there's someone who knows the ins and outs of the company to take care of it.
I got fired from a Temping job at Kwik Fit Insurance back in 1999 after i swore at the General Manager. I was walking past his desk and he told me to pick a bit of paper near his desk someone had left on the floor, i said no. Later on he told me to get out, i swore him and walked out, i knocked a bin over on the way out. He was a **** prick.
Most of layoffs (redundant is bs, is laying off people cause its easier) never needed to happen, its a way to hide money highjacks in companies and bad management. You'll do just fine shokurah, trust yourself. And pilling on boozys suggestions, heres a darker one. Two words. Usb Killer
I wouldn't advise revenge, (usually) that would just be kicking a company while it's going down.
Indeed. And, perhaps more importantly, the world is often a smaller place than you might imagine and it's surprising how often you might find yourself in need of a job from someone you previously worked with (or someone who knows someone etc.) Burning the bridges might seem satisfying in the short term, but it can be decidedly limiting on you more than anyone else in the future....
Good luck anyway, in m experience there is always another opportunity just around the corner and sometimes it's the little setbacks in life that end up sending you down a better road. Embrace the possibilities. :-)
Still in a pretty crappy mood, but that being said I've sent out my first application today - only 3 days after being fired. Not bad ... I usually don't work this fast, but the deadline on this one was Sunday so I had to move quick.
Since I'm getting pay for another 6 months but have to stay there working (unless I find something else of course) and because the letter I signed doesn't actually say that payments will stop if I find a new job, I'm going to call my union tomorrow and see if they can help me get paid for 6 months even if I find a job af 2. Who knows. ;)
When I got made redundant 10 years ago I got 3 months pay in lieu of notice, plus 1 month pay per year I had been working there.
That was quite generous, statutory is 1 week per year, and my contract was for minimum of 2 weeks per year.
Also got £72 a week off the state for up to 6 months, linked to tax paid rather than financial circumstances.
Having been with this employer for 10+ years I I get 6 months redundancy pay. Had I worked 12 years or more I'd have gotten an extra month for each year I'd been there (or something), so that's about the same, but my boss has decided that I also has to work the whole 6 months. That is not up to me. I'm calling my union anyway though.
In my 20 years at the 'Ministry' I think I was probably the most unsuccessfully disciplined trade union rep they'd ever had. Things would progress so far locally then someone in Employee Relations would halt it. Last one took 18 months, the day after it was halted I handed my notice in as I'd made new plans. The look on manamgements faces when they realised they could have saved themselves a lot of effort was wonderful.
I'm a manager at my work....I may have to fire somebody soon :(
I'm generally not allowed to do the hiring, and firing, but it's one of my guys who's letting us down, I don't actually hire, and fire, but when it comes to somebody being a total f**k and it's one of mine they'll make me cut him loose.
Hopefully the fella improves some soon, he's still pretty inexperienced, and I was willing to give him more time. Some of my best guys started off clueless and took ages to get good, now I can't do without them, I'd hate to think I'd be pushed to get rid of a potential good worker, just cos' the higher ups are getting impatient :(
One weeks notice per year between 2 and 12 years, so ive got 11 weeks notice?
and
One weeks pay under 41 per year x4
one and a halfs weeks pay over 41 x7
for 11 years, starting 2005

It certainly puts things into perspective, doesn't it. I feel a bit bored and despondent at work. But hey, I'm earning and feeding my family. Guys I hope you all find something good this year.

If we're going down that road, might as well light a thermite on top of the bosses car :))
