  • I'm definitely a candidate for diabetes and early death, I sit behind a desk, don't exercise and my diet (as people on here will know) isn't that great, plus I drink loads of diet drinks (so a candidate for cancer cos of the aspartame)
    I'll be lucky to see 50.

    @Morkin
    Hereditary yes but it tends to skip a few generations especially type1 although opinion can be quite divided.

    @Fog

    My sincere empathies Fog, no experience with metformin or glipizide et al, Humilin m3 on the other hand. :(

    You're right not only unfit fat baskets get it,Gary Mabbutt for example, that's the cruelty of it.

    or diabetics

    I found out I had it last year, I doubt I'm the only one here who has.. and well metformin/other stuff is hardly "lol" material.

    wouldn't mind, if my diet consisted of the chip shop every night or I sat behind a desk all day, but neither was the case.

    I got diagnosed type 1 about 10 years ago. Only really had 1 bad incident, about 6 months ago I ran out of long acting insulin and didn't have any for 3 days - ended up connected to machines in ICU for 2 days after practically vomiting my stomach inside out.

    Morkin, Type 1 and type 2 are different - Type 1 is considered heriditory, its an immune deficiency that attacks your own insulin. I guess that loosing use of your pancreas would be considered Type 1 as well. Type 2 is when your pancreas has had enough of your diet and is usually reversible... that's the one the BBC likes to threaten us with. I won't lie, it does kinda annoys me that 2 very different diseases are labelled under the same thing, it doesn't help when it comes to charities.

  • Morkin, gravy ? what is this northern stuff you speak of.. if it was covering food, then you couldn't count the pea's.. hhmm maybe a good idea. I do use curry sauce on chips though.. only found out what "hendos" was the other month.. guess it's a very northern thing.

    zx1, it's totally random.. I have a family history of it.. so it's partly genetics.. I've been borderline for a long time where as another member of my family is type 1 (injections) for the past 20 years.. try using "stevia" based sweetners instead of aspartame ones (e.g. green tin coca cola)

    andrewvanbeck, I bought a book I do need to start going thru. by david hack , The Back to Basics Diet: Seven Weeks to Change Your Life. .. he reversed his diabetes.. so not sure if I can, maybe. but I'll wait for the weather to improve a bit.
  • Well if you do end up being diagnosed, lets hope its type 2. It annoys me how many books there are that claim to provide a cure for diabetes, they don't state Type 2 - so people have the impression that type 1 is cureable... when people start to tell me about the cure for diabetes, I instantly ask them for their pancreas. Media warns about the dangers of having a bad diet, proclaiming diabetes as a sign that things really have gotten out of hand, then they market books proclaiming to provide a cure through healthy eating and exercise. Meanwhile this promotes the idea that diabetes is a mild, curable, manageable condition that you can cure for yourself with a little hard work - diabetics are assumed to be fat and lazy with terrible diets. The 2 different types of diabetes need to be distinguished, renamed if need be, because the perception is very harmful. That's why they call Type 1, juvenile diabetes in America, because it forces the distinction, people question how a kid can have diabetes already and are more likely to read up on it.

    I definitely do need to stop using those aspartame sweeteners in my coffee, but the brain kinda fools itself into thinking that's what sugar tastes like, and switching to different sweeteners tastes... well, like sweeteners that you aren't used to.
  • I don't drink coffee, but I gave up having sugar in tea many years ago...
    I don't use sweeteners. After a week or two you get used to it. Thereafter, it's no longer a problem :-)

    I also decided when I was in my late teens that Coke and Pepsi were not for me. So don't buy them now. Instead I buy milk if I can.

    The trouble is, in a lot of shops, there are very few "soft" drinks that don't have sugar or sweeteners in apart from overpriced bottled water :-(

  • I have the odd can (maybe once a week) but tend to just drink water, and a few cups of coffee a day. But I eat a fair amount of carp a few times a week, as the Saucer thread will testify.

    I'll be lucky to see 50.

    Don't worry the Aspartame will riddle your brain so full of holes, that you will forget to put your trousers on, and spend forever more in prison as a flasher.

    Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

    Does it taste like Cod ?

    They recommend sniffing it as the taste is so bad

    You could cook it up and eat it in a sandwich like the LA Beast... :P :-&
  • Coke Life tastes like cheap store brand Cola from the 80's, like Panda Cola from Superdrug. The best diet cola IMO is Pepsi Max Cherry, its like they care about the taste more than who they'll market it towards. Coke Zero is basically just diet coke marketed towards men instead of overweight women... Coke Life should be marketed as a toilet cleaning product.
  • If coke life is the stuff in the green can then that is the vile stuff that I spat out again after tasting it for the first time.
  • oh I've got to try a can. I've been avoiding it as I thought it was full sugar. But if it tastes as bad as Panda Pop... he he.
    Sod it!

  • I've never had Coke Life, I saw them here a few years ago, and after deciding that everything but Cherry Coke is f**king disgusting anyway I thought to myself "hipster" Coke, nah you're not fooling me. I can't even drink Cherry Coke though now it tastes totally different to when I was younger and seems to get progressively worse on a yearly basis, plus it gives me insane indigestion if I drink it.

    The only Pop I actually drink now is Dr. Pepper, Irn-Bru, or Ginger Ale, and even then the only one of those 3 I drink frequently is the good Doctor. Which I am trying to gradually stop altogether.

    Other than that I drink water, or beer :))
