I'm kind of in the same boat, I am close to completing an Oracle Certified Java 7SE programming course , just need to sit and pass the two exams. I am hoping that it will get me a job but realise that one needs to build up a portfolio of stuff to be able to show a potential employer as well as the certification. I found a lot of very useful stuff online like tutorialspoint as well as lots of apps easy and fun to use. I ended up learning JavaScript/HTML as well as Java using these.
