Which Internet Browser is best?

edited August 2005 in Chit chat
I'm thinking of ditching Internet Explorer, and switching to an alternative, but which one is best; Opera, Firefox or what?

I'll be using the browser on a Win98SE system, so what would anyone recommend?

Thanks for any answers.

    Firefox.

Although I've never used Opera so I can't say whether it's better. Firefox is miles better than IE though.

I've used MSIE, Netscape and Firefox, but the one I fell in love with is Opera. Once you re-arrange the messy toolbars and turn off the hideous default skin, it's a wonderful and functional browser.

Firefox, but I have to keep using IE for windows updates :( any way around this?

    Definitely Firefox!

I only use MSIE for "firing up" a custom download-manager

I've been using Opera for a few years now and I've not turned back to IE once.

I've tried Firefox and it's good, but I prefer Opera.

    Both work fine on Win98.

Firefox is great as there are lots of little pluggins you can have, I have weather reports for my town in the bottom corner. It does block some bits I don't like though when I cut links it doesnt paste them back as link, anyone know how to get around this.

Firefox for me. I've tried many alternatives to IE over the years, and for me this is the best - certainly the best suported. Though it should be noted that I've never tried Opera.

At the moment I'm using a friend's computer and she has IE installed. It's amazing how much you come to use the tabbed-browsing feature of something like Firefox. I've got stacks of IE windows open, instead of the usual one or two Firefox windows.

Firefox. I try to use as many browsers as possible so I can see how my site looks on other peoples computers.

IE is a pain in the arse.

I heard that FireFox is a good browser, but I use my dad's mac for Internet, and I use Safari for that.

Yep, Firefox for me. Was using IE up until this year, and FF has now replaced it as my default browser.

I've used Opera too, but overall FF does it for me. It's really easy too if you're migrating from IE. It imports your Favourites/Cookies/etc no problem.

I use Opera most of the time. Version 7.23. It's not perfect. It does let me stop and resume downloads, zoom screen and it is pretty quick. It also lets you resume browsing from the sites you were last on.

You need to customize is it a little to begin with, get rid of the options you don't need on screen. And choose the simple skin.

Opera does not replicate websites in exactly the same way as IE though.

For this reason I also use Slimbrowser, which is more or less and imitation of IE.

I did try Firefox, but I went back to Opera.

I hardly use IE, unless Hotmail starts acting funny occasionally.

Hmmm, I need a small footprint browser for a limited memory Win98 SE machine. Any suggestions?

Also a small (free) firewall. Zonealarm wants more memory than the machine has, never mind an OS.

    cheers

i like opera. i dont know if its actually the fastest as they claim to be, but its sure a helluva lot better than ie.

Dunno if this'll help but Sygate do a free firewall that's only taking up 8meg on my machine.

But I'm thinking you're looking for something smaller...

Yes, that looks like my my best bet. Thanks for the info.

Normally the machine sits behind an IPCop firewall but it may occaisonally get connected directly.

Zonealarm seems to have memory leeks which would cause real headaches.

    I'll give it a whirl.

I recommend Kerio Personal Firewall. Free 'limited' edition for home use.

    Looked at that but:

    System requirements indicate a non-starter...

Kerio Personal Firewall 4 requires 10 MB of disk space for installation and runs on desktop editions of Windows 2000 and XP.

Kerio Personal Firewall 4 DOES NOT run on Windows 9x, Me, NT, 2000 Server and 2003 Server.

Im using Firefox but dont rate it much higher than IE.

There are a few little annoying problems I have (like playing basic embedded *.mid files and it not working if the player dont show).

Was very nice at first due to no popups but I guess those swines are onto firefox and I'm started to get 1 or 2 every now and then. IE has cut down on theirs so I'm thinking of switching back.

I find firefox is a little slower than IE too, I know a lot of ppl disagree with that but thats my experience.

I'd recommend trying Opera before switching back to IE ;)

nobodys denying firefox doesnt have any problems, it does, quite a few BUT it still has about 80% less security holes and vunrabillities than IE, so i wouldnt go back at all...........better to be slower and have to listen to stuff etc another way rather than end up hacked, with viruses and spyware coming out of every orriface

Firefox is pretty good. Quick, robust, secure, easy to use, with great features like tabbed browsing, skins, plugins (so you can extend the browser features by downloading what you want), RSS feeds, online browser updates, bookmark management, etc. A web-surfers delight for sure.

As for download managers, it has an integrated one but you can always override it with your fav one, provided your download manager has a firefox plugin (most do). I have setup Get Right to take over my downloads from firefox and it works pretty well!

For windows updates, has anyone tried AutoPatcher (www.autopatcher.com)? It's just a single download and it takes care of automatically updating your windows with latest patches (latest depending upon the current version of AutoPatch, that is). No need to go to MS site and trying to figure out what patches you require!
