SPIN: Crashing / Screenshot questions

edited August 2005 in Emulators
I've recently downlaoded Spin, and I've found it quite unstable on my PC (Windows 98, Celeron 800, S3 Savage 3D graphics card), often crashing in fairly innocuous situations. What might be causing this?

The main reason I downloaded Spin was to grab screenshots for www.mobygames.com, as it has a screen capture facility whereas ZX32 (my usual emulator, which I'm otherwise happy with) does not. However, I have found that this does not crop the screen border, even when the display is set not to display this (the program calls this ZX32 mode, ironically). Is it possible to over-ride this behaviour, or is another emulator which can produce border-less screenshots? Cropping them is a nightmare, trying to differentiate between the black border and the balck edges of a screen image.

Does your image manipulation tool not allow you to crop out a fixed size border (as I assume Spin produces) automatically? If not, I'd suggest the solution here is to get a better image manipulation tool.

Mail me - we've fixed quite a few win98 specific bugs lately. I'll update your copy.

I can certainly add that in, and send you an update.

[EDIT] - Ok, the border saving issue is fixed. Get in touch, you can have an update. [/EDIT]

  • edited May 2005
That dude happens to be Sir Clive Sinclair :) Although being a little picture, and not recognising him myself at first I used to think it was Dunny, thinking "Wow !... some 70-odd year old blokes working on Speccy apps" hehe

Fck! When I try to open Spin and I have an internet connection established, it gives me millions of errors including "Canvas does not allow drawing" and "Spin made an invalid operation" jumping out over and over again and eventually I have to reboot my computer...like now :)

I have the Rollback version of Spin, but it was doing it even in the .04 version :(

That sounds like lack of GDI resources, number one source of W9x crashes. Could be GDI resource leaks in Spin, or just that you had too little free resources when you started it (due to too many apps running, or even leaks in other apps).

You should use the resource monitor to avoid this kind of crashes.

Thanks a lot Paul, you're a star. I wish the big professional companies had technical support and user interaction of this standaed.

Hey, no problem. I enjoy messing around in SPIN.

Of course, nobody gets to actually *use* these new fixes if NOBODY BOTHERS TO MAIL ME.

    :-p

    Can you recommend me one?
All I have running extra is an internet connection. I have everything turned on without it (I mean Im offline) and it works perfectly.
    :(
Will buying an extra 128 or 256 Ram help?

FRGT/10: Why not give the new version of SPIN a try? We've fixed all sorts of win98 problems, it may be that we've fixed yours.

No, we decided to take that out as nobody uses it. We do that a lot.

There isn't one - do try to keep up. Read up through this thread for clues.

OK, am I supposed to send you Spin and youll update it or youll just send it on my mail?

...well a lot of people use Rollback, just check the RZXArchive - some of the games wouldnt have been completed without it.
Couldnt we make it this way: youll update my version and keep the rollback function?
    :)

Hey, I don't think I ever got this update. Can you email it to me?
  • edited August 2005
Sorry for the delay, folks - we've stopped dishing out previews of SPIN while the new updates are working at least semi-stable.

    Won't be long though...[1]

[1] Yes, I know, I said that before.
