PC knackered, help needed?

So, with an hour of my show yesterday afternoon, mi main pc cut out without warning, as though there was a powercut but i dont think there was, and its dead. Theres light on the green switch on the back so theres some power but when you press the on button, nothing, at first theres a flash of a green light for a millisecond next to the floppy drive, apart from that nothing, no whirrs, no beeps...zilch

so its either PSU or motherboard? how do i test them, without taking out and putting into another machine? like i said there is power so cant be the PSU? unless the power outputs dropped? which leaves the motherboard?

  • No idea, but I would strip the pc, remove everything you can (drives/memory/cards) then put them back, maybe a reseat is all that is needed. I've found that when I've had an issue like that then reseating memory has helped me, ymmv. :)
    So far, so meh :)
  • yeah i was thinking about that, gotta take out the dvd drive anyway to put back in this machine im using, which i took it out of to put in that one lol.

Its a massive graphics card too, XFX?

tbh it was mi dads pc (r.i.p dad) so dont have much info on it or the bits.

just took the sides off and plugged it in, theres a small green light on in the corner of the motherboard and graphics card, think its on the motherboard (just right next to where it says "turbo key")

im thinking the PSU is ok as im getting little green lights all over, just no overall working on the motherboard etc?

  • Woody has just mentioned in chat that the 12v line of the psu may have popped. Try taking things out first and then go from there. Fingers crossed...
    So far, so meh :)
  • Come to think of it, considering it may be a juicy gfx card, that may be the case

  • taken out the 2 dvd drives and still nothing, unplugged the lead to the 2 side panel fans, and nothing.

although one of the dvd drives has built in usb socket, i can only unplug that from the motherboard not physically remove from the machine as its stuck to the drive and mi dads put other wires inside the 2 wires for that doh lol

  • It's not a Dell is it?
Anyway, might be worth trying to short the powerup button, if you look for the long connector to the motherboard from the PSU, you should have a green wire, which can be shorted to ground to force a start up.
Really though, I think it might be a motherboard issue - check for bloated capacitors, but usually this means buying a new MB.
  • OOH just took the graphics card out (Geforce 9600 GSO) and its fired up, little temp screen on the front lit up, little green light on the front lit up, fan on the back whirring, and the 4 little blue lights around it lit up.

so PSU is either faulty as woody said? or the graphics cards knacked?

  • Has the motherboard got built in graphics? If so plug the monitor unto that port.

one way to find out lol, just plugging the dvd drives, fans back in, gonna leave the graphic card out and plug a monitor in

Monitors plugged in to the on board, i can see it booting up correctly, everything else is in apart from the GeForce card

ive cleaned all the gunk out of the onboard fan on the geforce card...and everything else i can, next step plug that back in see what happens?

  • So either the power line to the card is dead, or the gfx card is dead, :/
    So far, so meh :)
  • MtB on his own:

the powerline to it is a massive thick yellow and black corded thing.

right, plugged the graphics card back in and...............dead lol, so unplugged the cable but left it in situ and it fires up again, theres even a red light on the graphics card that shines everything red, that worked but no power cable plugged in Oo

  • would just plugging the cable into the graphic card show anything? or does it need to be plugged into the pci socket as well, just thought, it might show if theres a working cable, but wont stop the pc booting up completely?

  • Got a voltmeter? Test the output from the PSU.
If you're lucky it may only be a bad component on the m/b, look for signs of damage particularly can capacitors or the little flat round orange/brown type they bulge usually if bad but its not something to do if you've no experience with electronics. A mate who know this stuff should be able to run diagnostics on the card for you otherwise it looks like time to spend money..
