Very tricky guess the game from description.

edited July 2017 in Games
I found this game on WoS a few year's ago. For some perverse reason I'd like to play it again, if only to work out what to do.

-Not well known.
-Probably late 1980s even though it looks 1983. Might even be a 1990s homebrew, I had it in mind as a UK game but can't guarantee it.
-Big, but not elaborate panel on left, play area on right
-yellow player sprite, possibly a genie or a Turkish chap.
-Platform game, possibly green game border
-Clunky, bugged and crap
-Couldn't get off the first screen, mainly because I couldn't work out what to do. You would jump around and not seem to get anywhere.

Ring any bells?

  • I always say... get doodling and draw what you remember, post a picture or two (no prizes and your artwork won't be returned unless you include a S.A.E)

Here's a mockup done in ZX-Paint, hope it doesn't do more harm than good...

I remember the jump being rubbish, and a major cause of the game being unplayable.

  • That game looks amazing. Please make it and call it 'Stuff' ;)

In other news, I have no idea!

  • If all else fails, you can take a look at all in-game pictures from "Arcade: Platform" titles. There are about 700 of them, it won't take too long.

In old times, I would go to Advanced Search at WoS, select type "Arcade: Platform" and "Display as: in-game screens". However displaying screens in search results is still broken. Right now, the best alternative is probably SpectrumComputing, from the homepage you can choose "Arcade: Platform" and look at the result pages.

  • Elevator Boy?

and no, I had no idea that such game existed, just browsed platform games from latest years of Spectrum ;)

Not either of those two thanks fellas.

Spectrum Computing to the rescue though, it's Load 'n' Run's Hic Game.

As you can see it's not quite as I remember it, the sprite was the closest thing. I'm still unable to get off the first screen, I assume you're supposed to collect the 3 objects and go to the white thing. I'm barmy the way you can stick to walls and walk outside the play area. Clearly these are intentional features and thus a precursor to Super Meat Boy ;-)

It's very weird browsing screenshots and even seeing the new titles in there!

  • Well,
    - player sprite is not yellow
    - border is not green
    - no big panel on the side

So you didn't give us a chance ;) But it's great that you've found it.
  • Aye sorry. That's memory for you, and there's a valuable lesson to take from this - the person doing the remembering may only get 1 striking detail right, or none!

I've collected all 3 items and gone to the white thing in the ceiling, but the clock keeps ticking down. What the bloody hell are you supposed to do?!

  • Great that you found it....

Police officer: So... Mr Tape, please describe the vear-hear-cul in question that caused the accident.
Mr Tape: It was a large red, 18 wheeler lorry. It had Stuff Stuff written in large yellow lettering on the side. The cab was black, decked out in chrome pipes.
Police officer: Hmmmm... there doesn't seem to be a large lorry in sight. I do see a green 3 wheeler Robin Reliant over there, it has a few scratches on it.
Mr Tape: Yeah, that's it! That's the one!
  • Chortle! Anyway this is all your fault - if I hadn't done the mockup on your suggestion someone would have got it instantly from my faultless description :-p

Does anyone know how to complete a screen? It's been mapped so someone out there must.
  • When are you making your superior version?

Heh, it did occur to me!

In fact it might qualify as a ZX-Dev conversion...

Could you please supply a link for Spectrum Computing? I tried a search and all I got was IBM Spectrum results! Took IBM long enough to catch up eh?

Strange feature to Hic Game, if you press E it finishes the level.
