This movie came out in '83 as did He-man, but the He-Man figure was supposedly released in '82.
He-Man had been in development for a few years prior.

Funny I could tell from how skimpily clad everyone was, and the animation style it was Bakshi before it even said it was.
Looks alright actually I don't ever remember seeing that when I was younger, although the main Villain looks more like He-Man than the young Barbarian guy does.
I remember Blackstar toys being super popular in about 82/83, and strangely enough of a considerably higher quality than He-man figures. I even had a few Blackstar toys, even though I never ever remember seeing the cartoon, I do remember seeing the adverts for the toys.
Wasn't the main Blackstar guy literally the same as He-Man but with black hair instead of blonde?

Bakshi and Filmation seemed to have begun using rotoscoping at about the same time

Thundarr came out with its cool setting,based somewhat on Conan
Filmation ripped it off with Blackstar
So maybe Bakshi saw Blackstar or Thundarr and decided to do a more grown up version?
then Filmation incorporated the cooler ideas and more appealing art style from 'Fire and Ice' into he-man
