DIY European plugs are huge too. I got a couple while on holiday to put on UK 2 / 4 - way power adaptors for running my LEGO Trains at a Dutch show. I thought it would save on adaptors but honestly the plug is as large as a pre-moulded one and an adaptor together.
A lot of these plugs don't have fuses in though, which UK ones have to by law.
Keep in mind that in a moulded plastic plug (except for UK style), the wires are directly soldered to the end of the metal contacts, or they are spot welded or sometimes there is a crimp arrangement. So there are no screw terminals. Also the moulded plastic acts as a chord grip, so no separate cord grip is needed. All together, this does allow them to be cheaper and smaller than a rewireable type.

Step up to red alert. Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb!
Looking forward to summer in Somerset later in the year :)
