Crash ratings were always a mystery. Shadowfire with its icons and instruction manual that didn't quite make sense got a Getting Started of 90%. Don't Buy This in the same issue got a Getting Started of 27%. Eh?

Oh yeah, I recall there was some discussion on the letters page about the boosting of ratings for some of the Crash Smashes.

I always felt that Overall should have been an average of Playability and Addictive Qualities (with Value For Money somehow thrown in) as they were probably the most important marks. Given how epic-ally Knight Lore was received it's 94% is under-rated for me (wrong thread I know). It should have belonged to the 97% Overall club and would have done if Playability (97%) and Addictive Qualities (96%) were averaged.

Yeah, maybe a new thread, "games that should/should not have been in the 97% club" :D
Ooh, that could end up a flame war ;-)
  • Airwolf SHOULD NOT have been smashed!
    Yes it should......with a hammer!

Surely you jest? Airwolf was an excellent game. I literally spent weeks crashing my helicopter into that bloody wall...

Actually, once you got past the first two walls, it really was a decent game.

Nah I never liked it even after the chore of getting past the first wall only to encounter another one was a slap in the face, and even getting past that, the game was kind of average.

I think it could've been released as anything as well, apart from the box art, and the fact the main sprite was a helicopter it really had sod all to do with Airwolf :))

The sequel was even more detached...

    Every night is curry night!
  • I gave up with Airwolf after constatntly crashing into that bloody wall.
It's so hard it's like a game from Dinamic and not at all as good as other Elite stuff.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......

I seem to remember the first few screens where hard but it improved after that. But I also remember being really disappointed in how unlike Airwolf the helicopter looked. I wonder if the graphics have ever been hacked to fix that...

  • Kokotoni Wilf. For the time it deserved a Smash, I thought it was a great game and it is still one of the most memorable games from that late '84/early '85 period. It was up there with its contemporaries; Pyjamarama, Underwurlde, Monty Mole etc..
  • Went for Chaos - because I still play it (all be it the DS remake) AND considering when it was released and who it would have appealed to - not giving it a smash is quite misleading... people might have missed out because of that. But I was a Sinclair User man anyway.
