Tried these recently - I tend to buy the most unusual flavours I can find so as to dissuade my kids from wanting any and I can scoff them all myself!
Tesco Finest Stilton &Truffle Crinkle Cut Crisps
    IDShot_225x225.jpg
And it worked! I thought they were aright, but the kids actually spat them out! :D

    These were horrible though:
Tesco Finest Crisps Massaman Curry Crinkle Cut

Basically tasted like pure coconut oil with a hint of curry. Avoid.

I think we need to rename ourselves to World of Crisps.

That reminds me - didn't the Monster Munch varieties also come in different shapes to match the monster on the front of the pack? Aren't they all the same shape now...?

Kind of yes. To quote from the Wiki entry here > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Munch
    Smiths Monster Munch (1977–1995)

The original Monster Munch used two different snack shapes, related to two of the Monsters. The shape known as a "monster paw" that is still used today has long been the subject of dispute over whether it represents a paw or, instead, the single eye and lashes of Yellow monster (currently seen on Pickled Onion flavour packs).

The other represented the gangly, long-tongued Pink Monster: circular with two bumps on the top for eyes, protrusions on either side and a tongue dangling down.

For a limited time in the early 1990s, there were also spider-shaped Monster Munch in the Sizzling Bacon flavour
    Walkers Monster Munch (1995–2008)

In 1995 the Monster Munch brand was taken over by Walkers who relaunched them with a range of four flavours. One of the most significant changes was that the crisps were much smaller than before.

The monster characters were also redesigned.

    Original Monster Munch relaunched (2008–present)

In September 2008 Walkers re-launched Monster Munch, based on the original Monster Munch from the Smiths days. The crisps have returned to their original larger size, and the packs include retro designs based on the original packs, featuring three of the original four monsters.

"Roast Beef" flavour features the Pink Monster as originally, "Pickled Onion" features the Yellow Monster and "Flamin' Hot" is marketed with the Blue Monster. The orange monster was not brought back.

A Mega Monster Munch website was launched to coincide with the relaunch.

  • I recall Piglets being small hollow pig shaped crisps, 3D molded half parts and stuck together leaving a seam along the middle.
  • I think that there were zesty lemon / lime flavour Skips with a yellow / green colouring for the crisp.
  • I still think Tudor's smoky bacon were one of the best crisps in the early 80's. I used to have them every day at school. I think they cost about 15p :))

There probably is such a site already somewhere :D although apart from that crispnation blog I'm not aware of one.

Although it is an 'off topic' area so it does not seem too much, I just ignore some of the topics in here where the subject does not interest me. :) But I do see what you're saying yes.

That does make sense now, thank you. :)

I do not recall these, although not liking cheese (at all) and hating tomoto's too Skips were something I would not of had too often. It is quite possible the flavour you mention here was something I did try.

I can't remember ever having tried the Tudor brand, likely I have in the dim/distant past...

I do hear good things about the Tyrells and SeaBrook brands though, at least looking at various reviews.

  • I quite like Seabrooks, not had any for a while though. Not tried Tyrells yet.
I found some crisps from Mackies who are known for ice cream, not sure how they managed to graduate to crisps. They were branded as hand cooked, they were fine but really greasy.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • A new Greggs opened up on Friday next to my workplace, and I spotted that they are selling their own brand crisps. Has anyone tried them? Are they worth having a chomp on?
    These ones...

I did look at SeaBrooks when doing the online shop the other day but did not get any, I half wish I'd tried a multipack of either just salted or the beefy ones, but some places only have a larger share bag and I wanted the multibag option really. I will try the plain salted ones next time to see.

Nearest Greggs is a bit of a walk for me however I do have a friend who works there (but not the local one) so I will ask her if her branch sells them and what they are like. :)

I'll probably grab a bag of each flavour on Monday at work, just for testing purposes :D

  • It's funny Greggs making their own crisps now, I was almost freaked out the last time I was back home and they were selling hot breakfast sandwiches, and hot dogs. me and my mates used to make jokes about buying kebabs from Greggs years ago, but the way things are going, it's not even that unrealistic any more :))
    Every night is curry night!
  • I'm sure a few years ago Walkers did a flavour called something like cajun squirrel or something. I think it was a limited edition.

I asked my friend and she said they have sold them (in the one she works in at least) for about 6 or so months maybe a bit longer, said they were quite popular generally.

You'll have to provide your thoughts / verdict here on them as I'm curious myself. :)

Ah yes they have had a lot of erm 'unusual' flavours over the years :D , here's a pic I made of two I found, including your infamous Squirrel :)

=)) Perhaps that will be considered for the next 'vote for your favourite' round lol. Having said that I've not bothered with those 'choose or lose' packs as I have not seen one where I like both contents unfortunately.

Tried some Jacobs cracker bbq today although its debatable if they count as crisps maybe not sure but they are in a crisp 'bag' as such, they are quite nice.

Pretty much all of those Walkers ones just tasted like oily salted potato to me.
If you're going to do novel flavours, at least start with a decent crisp product.
Similarly their 'Mediterranean' ones didn't taste anywhere near as nice as the actual ones they sold in Mediterranean countries (under the 'Lays' brand).

  • Our local Home Bargains are selling Brannigans Beef & Mustard flavour - 6 packs for a quid. Seriously nice, really powerful flavour, plus the rest of the family hates them so I get 'em all to myself :-)
  • If Jacob's Cracker Crisps count for this thread, then it's only one step from them to Mini Cheddars.

For the record, the Stilton variety does actually taste like Stilton, or at least there's a noticeable addition of blue mould flavour. There's little to no smoked flavour in the Applewood variety, and I'm not convinced the Red Leicester variety is anything other than regular Mini Cheddars with a bit of extra orange colouring.
  • I like original mini cheddars and i think i tried the ham ones once. I'd like to try the cheese and chives flavour soon.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • I've only found the Stilton variety once and thought they were lovely!
Wish I could find them again.

Any love for Twiglets on this thread?
Can't get them here in Ireland unless some shop gets an import job-lot. Brought back a few big bags when we were over to UK on the ferry in the summer, but unfortunately the rest of my family have developed a taste for them now, so they're all gone :(

yes they are not quite crisps really are they ? More (broken!) cracker bits in a crisp bag, same as the Ritz ones...

I'm assuming that they are not listed as available for an online shop ? Probably not as the distro place (depends which shop) won't have them either. Does seem very odd you can't get them from anywhere though. :(

Yes. What's not to like about crunchy wheat sticks covered in dried Marmite?

But what you can get in Ireland, from your very favourite crisp manufacturer, is:

Why? In the name of Father Ted, why? That has got to have been a decision made at three in the morning when the bar's been drunk dry of Guinness and the landlord has had to do an emergency run with the poitín still.

  • Crisps are so expensive in the USA now. Is it the same in the UK?

I want to pay $1 for a bag of crisps but they are like the equivalent of $1.20 for one bag that is smaller than a grab bag here.

Dollar store chips can be ok, but generally its a big bag, that's only a third filled if lucky and the tastes are nothing nice at all except maybe the BBQ sauce flavor (which incidentally is vegan friendly).

  • I did try Guinness flavoured ones once somewhat unusual
    No one important.
  • Just discovered this stuff exists: Fried egg taste chips!!!

    huevofritochips.jpg

    Life is so marvellous... =P~
  • Surprised no one has mentioned this or if they did I missed it, given its 'Crisp' connection :D

Did find it slightly strange the game is a completely different erm 'kettle of fish' on other platforms though.

No other 'Crisp' news from me apart from a lack of finding the BBQ Chicken McCoys Thick Cut ones :(

  • I tried one of those fusion flavours from the oven baked range of Walkers. It was spicy tomato and herbs, they were rotten. I'll try another flavour tomorrow.

  • Had far too much crisps and cheese over the weekend.

Those spicy nachos Doritos have given me gut-rot. Although that might be all the Hobgoblin too!
