Yeah, that is an odd one. Either it's an errant shark in the wrong place, because most N.A. sharks around that area come off the conveyor belt with anti-freeze already built-in. That's the reason for why people of the north have to hoist the shark up and let the meat air dry for six months, so the anti-freeze leeches out. Otherwise, it would kill whoever eats the shark.
That's weird because sharks can be found in the North Atlantic and so you'd think the species would be adapted to the cold. Great story though.
Are you sure about that factoid? I know that shark liver is toxic because it contains far too much Vitamin D (or so I believe) and I know that the Scandinavians eat 'hakarl' which is a delicacy of basically well rotted shark buried and allowed to more or less ferment because that adds to the flavour (I think even I might draw the line at that and I like smelly foods) but I never heard about the anti freeze thing. Interesting stuff we're getting here.
Sorry, I may have used an incorrect term due to faulty memory. I was under the assumption sharks basically had something similar to anti-freeze but it's actually something else called TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) which helps them survive in salty deep waters (as per this article). That chemical is a no-no for us humans, aside from the other toxins (urea, mercury) that are present in the shark.
So, yes the fermentation process does add to, or detract from depending on how you look at it, the flavor of the shark, but it also leeches out these harmful toxins, rendering the shark more amenable to our digestion system/general well being.
Miserable existence up in that part of the world by the sound of it! Eyeball parasites, sleeping seals getting eaten and then there are polar bears for whom i have no sympathy whatsoever after seeing a documentary about what clever hunters they are, not keen on bears at all myself if I had to live where they might show up it would be a heavy rifle at my side at all times. Or a ten gauge shotgun with solid ball.I admire the peoples like the Inuit who have managed to fashion a life under those conditions, using every scrap of whatever they can find and ingenious kayaks and igloos but me I'll take Tahiti thanks.

Daughter went home to Spain at the weekend, snow in Fuengirola and the surrounding area yesterday (Malaga?). She's in Calahonda and the mountains are white topped, while there was also snow on the beach!

Fuengirola is about 30-40 km from Málaga. The white of some mountains are snow but what's on the beach is hail as it can be seen here. The article says hailstones melted after only a few hours. In the inland it did snow.
It's almost impossible to see real snow on the beach at this latitude (last time it snowed in Málaga city was in the 50s, a very rare thing).
I take it that must mean you have steam heated radiators, if so, lucky you. Gas or oil fired obviously otherwise a timer wouldn't be involved, don't suppose anyone use solid fuel fired boilers. This house of mine I would rather have had an AGA to supply cooking, hot water and heating as mum and dad used to but the price of them plus the necessary installation which requires considerable structural strengthening, is astronomical, far outside my range.
So back to you, I assume we're talking about a pilot light - or perhaps not? Can't you change the thermostat settings and shouldn't that control the boiler ignition circuit?
Ugh... Starting at midnight through 18:00 tomorrow, we're supposed to get 45 mph winds, -30F wind chill. Some snow, they keep changing it due to the wind. It might be an inch, it might be half a foot.
I'm staying in tomorrow and bothering you guys instead!
It snowed heavily over night in Scotland so woke up to a couple of inches (oo_er!).
Managed to get to work easily as the trains were still running, i noticed the main road was all backed up for as far as i could see so i guess there had been an accident somewhere. A lot of people were going to be late for work!
It's been snowing on and off all day and luckily managed to get home, there was another couple of inches of lying snow that i had to trudge through to get home.
It's nowhere near as bad as what Mike's got (wonder how he's getting on?) but as i type it's snowing again. I hope the power doesn't go out.

Five or six days ago the cold lifted followed by two days of 60degrees F and thus the snow melted, hooray. Then the cold returned for the previous two days, bitter winds but no snow. Today was warmer, above freezing but foggy all day and snow is supposed to return tomorrow 1 - 3" are predicted. All in all it was a perfect window of opportunity for my wife to get in her once a month bus ride to NYC and get back before the next lot.
Woke up this morning to reports of heavy snow.... in other areas of the country.
It's quite sunny down here in Bristol.
yeah yesterday was the same, the news said northern england since i was travelling north to a job assessment in billingham i expected snow, nope, nor any here, yet yorkshire further south, and inland had loads lol

Surrey is virtually balmy compared to everywhere else. Although that wind from up north is a bit biting and doing a lot of damage. Trees are coming down everywhere.

Hákarl is fantastic. Don't believe the horror stories, don't believe Gordon Ramsay throwing up on a tiny cube of it. It smells of ammonia and tastes like ripe French cheese, and there's video evidence of me eating a big slab of it and enjoying it. I will publish it one day.
Surströmming is another very rotten can of worms (or even herring) altogether.
I saw on TV a few weeks ago Rick Stein eating some Hákarl in a bar. They washed it down immediately with some local spirit IIRC. After the first one he started enjoying it. Think I'll stick to a bag of scratchings and a pint, but I'd probably try it given the chance.

Looking forward to summer in Somerset later in the year :)
In Central Scotland it's currently 21C - i was out for a long walk this morning but came home when my hayfever flared up :(
Was jealous that the South East was having massive thunderstorms, i love watching them (but not being out in it!).
We've had two crackerjack thunderstorms this past week. Squall lines with donner und blitzen making the house shake because they were right overhead. I've been watching the temperatures reported by Mark and zx1 - 70's F - so it's not as low as I'd expected working on the assumption that the gulf stream is being slowed down by the freshwater from the polar thaw. Not that I'd wish that on anyone but I had thought it might explain the upsurge in precipitation as well as storm frequency.

I was jealous too and I live in the South East!
Bloody slept right through the thunderstorm!
The thunder storms in the SE were incredible, especially Sat night. I've never seen so many flashes of lightening in such a short period of time, they just kept flashing continuously for a time.
It's go really warm up here. People are walking around with their t-shirts off. Looks like we could be in for nice spell of weather.
The only slight concern is that it hasn't rained here for quite a while, unusual for Scotland!

Here I'm standing ten feet above the river. The big chunk of ice in the middle is roughly 3 feet thick.
A panorama from the same vantage point.
At least the compost is healthy.
Surströmming is another very rotten can of worms (or even herring) altogether.
Rain, high winds, hail, and a biting southerly that is bitter!
Ps: it’s late Autumn, about-to-turn Winter, down here (for context)
Dreaming of warmer climes, somewhere in the northern hemisphere!
Huzzah!
It was 14oC when I left for work this morning, with dew on the car windows.
