Lots of French stations booming in on the FM broadcast band.

Don't know if any of you fellow wosser's are interested in receiving/listening to long distance radio but currently here in the Lincolnshire area of UK, I have be receiving lots of French stations literally wiping out the UK stations. This is on the FM broadcast band. One signal is so strong I'm unable to receive our local Lincs FM on 102.2 due to co-channel interference of the a French station. Tropics are very good on the FM band this evening. If your in the UK and have an FM radio with good reception nearby, have a listen.

This is something to do with the signal bouncing off the atmosphere. It tends to happen more in warmer temperatures. Honest. It happened one hot summer a couple of years ago when it almost wiped out my entire FM band.

Yes mate it's called Sporadic E propagation. I've been using a new scanner this evening, a Yupiteru MVT-7100. Another to add to my collection of radios. It covers frequencies from 530Khz to 1600Mhz continuous and lets you choose all modes, so it's quite a nice bit of kit. I wanted to do some listening on the HF frequencies but at home it gets wiped out by interference from the neighbors wireless routers. I then wen't scanning other frequencies when I found the FM broadcast band chocker with French stations. Anyhow just wanted to post so folk could have a go at listening to some DX radio without expensive kit. Seem to be fading away now, but one is currently still strong on 100.70Mhz FM.

You made a good choice getting one Mark. Versatile little scanner with continuous frequency tuning, and the ability to select different modes. I bet these were quite expensive when new. Certainly very chuffed with mine. Shame a lot of radio users have gone digital now. Below 30Mhz is still very interesting though.

I got mine new, but a while after it was first introduced. I use it to listen to the air bands mainly. But scan across all bands sometimes. Trouble is work gets in the way, or keeping the garden in order, or my main hobbies (computing and electronics).

When the last Concorde landed at Filton airfield, I used it to listen to the chatter. But did not think to take an audio cable to link it to the camcorder I used to take a video of Concorde on it's final approach and as it flew almost directly over us as it landed.

Oh, I also used it to listen to air traffic control talking to the crew of the last flight worthy Vulcan (on it's fairwell flight around Britain) as it flew over the Bristol Channel. Caught a bit of the radio transmissions, but a more northerly flight path and low cloud prevented me from seeing her :(

I'm getting quite into the VHF bands, and we have quite a few airports close to us which makes for interesting listening. I'm using one of these Software Defined Radio sticks from the RTL-SDR blog which are based around the DVB sticks and come with all the bits and antennas. It's amazing even with a £20 stick and a vertical dipole what you can pick up. During this warmer weather I've picked up the London Bus control centre, and we are some distance from London.

Next challenge is RTTY, SSTV and NOASAT.

I had a mate some years ago that had a scanner that could pick up police radio, cordless phones and CB radios. We had a giggle on that some nights with the stuff we heard.

Wonderful and good to know I'm not the only WoS'er into the radio hobby. Understand Marks point of getting time. My time is usually late evenings, sitting in the garden having a listen around, when everything is done for the day. Does attract some very intrigued neighbors wondering what and why etc though :-?

jonesypeter - Really good value for money those. If you haven't yet try tinkering making up some antenna's, and remember height is might!
