The Devil Rides in. Played it once one rainy afternoon...decided standing in the rain would have been a better choice.

The Great Space Race. I bought it in the early days of the Spectrum and expected some kind of futuristic Valhalla type game, as it was by the same publisher in similar grand packaging. It was rubbish and was written in Basic so if you pressed the Space key, it interrupted the game and sent you to the code.
Even in 1984 when there were few classic games (just the Ultimate stuff and Manic Miner) it seemed pathetic.

I bought SAS Operation Thunderflash based on it's cool looking inlay cover. After starting the game up I lasted approx 20 seconds before being killed. Every single time. I just couldn't get any further than that.
So that game alone ranks as my worst speccy game.

    1985: The Day After.

I only bought it because the cover looked good.

KNOT in 3D was my most disappointing game. Saw the adverts, read a "review" and bought it.(It's like 3-D Tron!!!!)
What a load of paid-off, lying bastids - it was like 3-d CRAP, not tron.
Right up to the day I gave(doh) all my speccy stuff away I used to glance at it with hatred and disgust when getting other tapes out of the box.

    ASpec.
(Last time around I picked KungFuMaster - but it's definately knot in 3d that wins crappest out of those two)

    Sir Fred

It always amazes me that this game is on the 'good' list.

Remember buying it as it was Migro Gen and loved the Wally games. But couldn't get past the second screen in the pit...

Without doubt that's my personal worst game...

And Elite and Starquake of course not because they are bad but because they are so good they make modern ?40 internet blar blar blar based games seem pants....

    Give me ramix any day....

Elite awful...aint it funny how we all like different things....what didn't you like about elite...?

I also thought Manic Miner was boring - nothing new in each screen, but then again loved Wheelie - strange eh

I Of The Mask, it got a Crash Smash, looked cool, had Sandy White as the programmer(wow, 3d ant atack), but what the hell was going on? Could never get into it, total crap for ?8.95. Also at the time all shops had the policy of only exchanging it for the same game, damn.

I thought HAVOC was totally crap.

Airwolf, of course. For both NES and Spectrum.

Sir Fred[...] It always amazes me that this game is on the 'good' list.

It's 'cause it's one of the best games of all times. And it's not by Mikro-Gen, which just distributed it in the U.K. and Europe. In fact it is a Spanish game coded by Made In Spain.

Of course it has the inherent difficulty of Spanish games, but nothing to be afraid of. After some plays you'll master the movement which was pretty good designed with real physics. Also the gfx were great and it was a nice adventure in sum.

Airwolf? Its one of my favourites! I got it one christmas and after 2 days when i got past the wall and into the caverns, i started really loving it. Can still remember the adrenalin rushes as the laser cannon fired while trying to get into the last room with the scientist to rescue. Was one of the first games I completed, and I never used any pokes, although it just went back to the beginning.

    Loved that game. q,a,z,x,c

The worst of all time has to be schizoids.

While we're talking about games that are impossibly hard to play (Airwolf ... aaarrrggghhh!!!), has anyone ever succeeded in getting past the first screen in Dragon's Lair (without cheating)? It's not a bad game graphically, but I haven't played it in years because it's far too bloody difficult.

Street Fighter 2 is an awful game, definitely one of the worst in that time period. US Gold could have made it playable if they tried, but instead the game is far too slow and unresponsive to be any fun, plus you have to play the whole tape through every time you pick a different fighter. A total waste of time in my opinion.

    Necros.

    You serious? :o
I loved this game and still do :) Got quite far with it too.
If we are talking about the worst games then I'm amazed noone mentioned Sqij yet(or did I just missed the post?). The game is horrible and if I remember correctly you have to be super-hacker to even move the bloddy bird.

First screen of Dragons Lair??? The one with the wind bloke blowing you off a disc of wood??? That's not hard if your reactions are quick enough!! It's not Airwolf hard anyway.
Must be that dodgy Kilkenny water  It's raining today init so wait for it to go green

Yeah, I actually rushed out and bought Blue Thunder after reading the rave (Crash Smash Award) review in Crash! What a complete load of old crudballs that game is.

The Black Crystal. It was expensive! It was b*ll*cks! I bought it! I can't think of anything worse. There's the already mentioned The Great Space Race, but I only hired that one, and I wouldn't describe it as a game (a game actually contains some gameplay, right?!).

Some of the Mastertronic games were quite good. Spectipede, the first budget game I ever bought, was on their label(I think it was a re-release though), and it was a decent version of Centipede.
  • has to be "the empire fights back" - how they ever got away with the name i never know and it was so bad i played the game one entire weekend and by sunday night still didnt have a clue what the hell i was doing!

i'll never get that weekend back!

Having played Kick Off on the 16-bit I found it on here and had a go... I would have been seriously cheesed off even if I'd bought that for 20p at a car boot sale!

The games that spring to mind for utter 'argh!' factor were Raid over moscow, which tantalisingly showed you all the levels that looked ace, but I couldn't get out of the hangar... oh, I did once, then died straight away on the next screen coz I was so taken aback at getting out!

My vision of hell though is being locked in an empty room with only a spectrum (accessories) and copies of transylvanian tower, VU3D (Which i thought was a game when I was 6) and Zoids which was about as playable as a breeze block (and cost ?7 which was about 80 weeks pocket money).
