Subbuteo

So the other day i was browsing for kid stuff at the hipernarket where i normally go, in the toy section, when in the middle of the playmobil stuff without any logic, i am surprised with 3 teams from subbuteo for sale, the three main sides of Portugal.

I had never thought about this tabletop for ages, and i didnt even know it was still around. Got me thinking.

What are your experiences, memories? Is it still around in your life, did you revamp it for the kids... What are ypur thoughts on it?

Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........
  • Oh your perfect cousin!
What you like to do, he doesn't.
    Sod it!

My Ma says they cost a packet !
  • Bought a new set to play with my son (now 5): still don't know how to play the damn thing, but we have tons of fun! (My old set was in mint condition... after 5 minutes of play, they all got broke..)
  • Pffft - looks easy!

First rule of subbuteo, do not let your mum in the same room, she will tread on all figures and break them.
  • My best mate went through a phase of playing Subbuteo, I always hated going over there on Saturday afternoons and playing that bloody game, it’s so boring. But he’d throw a shitfit if I refused to play, half of his moods over stuff like that is probably half the reason why I’m so stubborn about not doing something I don’t want to these days.

  • My only lasting memory of Subbuteo is launching Scalextric cars off a ramp at high speed onto the pitch and enjoying the carnage.

My brother had Striker, where you'd push the player's head to kick the ball, it seemed more realistic than Subbuteo's flicking.

  • I used to play with bottle caps instead. Very popular in the 70s and 80s We stuck pics of players from football stickers on the surface of each cap. Even we played using a football ground drawed with a chalk. I remember playing amazing games.

yeah we did it Portugal as well. There was also another version, which was this, we took a connect 4 (https://www.amazon.com/Dmeixs-Score-Intelligent-Adults-Wooden/dp/B06Y6MMWQK) which was cheap, and used the thick markers and a marble, also with faces glued or scotchtaped

  • Sold a huge box of it about 10 years ago to a collector in Italy.

Back in the day i loved the look of it but probably didnt play it properly. My cousin had tons of it and it was good seeing all the teams he had and the stadium bits.

Always remember the throw on figures were a bit funny, or was it the corner person you 'pushed' ?

Think as a kid it was great to collect it, our local toy shop had tons of it. But i was a 'bit' too young to really get into it and soon after computers arrived and i rarely touched Subbuteo or board games etc after that
  • Boosy, please try the app 'Soccer Stars' and tell me if you find it boring
  • I don't really do Mobile Gaming, as most of the games are terrible, and a complete waste of money, and the few games I did download on my old phone I played them about twice, and actually did get bored.

This Soccer Stars game looks like a cross between air hockey, and 8 bit pool games, looks like it would be fun for about 5 minutes, then I'd never play it again.

Seems like a waste of storage space to me.

  • ^^yes, I reinstall this one to save space. It's a simple pool game with nice physics and apparently quite a lot players to find online. I get tired after playing a few matches but it's ok to play a simple pool game once in a while, simple enough to make you think a little bit, not too much so my four neurons don't flee their home :)

Load of rubbish ! Bit like modern gamers instantly dismissing all retro games

Got about 700+ games on my iphone, love it. Of course you get a lot of rubbish as well (Not keen on soccer stars) but platformers work very well on mobile as do many other types of games such as shooters. The problem is at the moment people dont pay for premium games so theres nots of freemium dross. As kids people were fine paying 1.99 for a Speccy game or more, years later in their 30s/40s they moan when an ios game is £3.99 !
  • Our pension money goes on food and bills now, not on £50 games, £3.99 for another game, or eat today, it is a fine line to choose, but now food usually wins.

People wouldn't moan about paying £3.99 for an I-phone game if they were half as good as a Speccy budget game.

  • My younger brother had a set, but didn't play it much.
Infogrames did a computer version, I quite liked the C64 version (viewed from overhead) but the Amiga's 3D view was terrible
  • Personally, I never saw the appeal of Subuteo, because you can only do football with it. I preferred Lego, I could make my Lego men play football, or go in to space, or build them a fair ground ride using the big black Lego motor tipped on to its side.

Why was it called Subuteo? It seems such an odd name for something considered a male oriented pursuit. Was it a foreign invention?

Computer Subbuteo seems like a weird concept. It makes even less sense than computer Scalectrix, which at least seemed like an excuse for some degree of track editing.
  • The game was very much an English creation...

    From the WIKI:
'The "Subbuteo" name derives from the neo-Latin scientific name Falco subbuteo (a bird of prey commonly known as the Eurasian hobby), after a trademark was not granted to its creator Peter Adolph (1916–1994) to call the game "Hobby".'
    Sod it!
