Oliver Twins and their 'tightness'

Hi all.

Why won't they allow downloads of their games?

Other bigger and better software houses like Ocean etc... have no problem in letting us enjoy the memories again.

The Oliver Twins weren't exactly up there with, as mentioned, Ocean etc..

So what's their beef?

Because they don't own the IP to their games, Mastertronic do and they won't allow distribution of any of the games they own.

  • I don't understand when you say 'IP'. What's that?
  • IP stands for Intellectual Property.

Basically The Oliver Twins don't actually own the games they wrote, they were written for and are owned by Mastertronic who have refused all requests to allow their games to be distributed.
They're their games and they're going to keep themselves!! (Unless of course you know where to look on the internet to find them...)
So essentially, it's not their fault.

  • They'd allow distribution if they could, I'm sure. The Oliver Twins are certainly not tight. After the launch of the Dizzy book at the National Videogame Arcade they took everyone to a Thai restaurant a few doors along and paid for their meals, despite Mr Fogarty's attempt to cause a Dizzy v Egghead punch-up. They're alright by me...

  • Surely it's Codemasters rather than Mastertronic that have denied distribution.
  • Yeah, I'd have thought Codemasters, whom they mostly worked for. But I don't really think you can call them tight, they've allowed free downloads of some of the Dizzy titles that were never released and I get the distinct impression they'd allow all their games to be available if it weren't for lawyers and contracts etc.
  • Well done for spotting my deliberate mistake, yes it's Codemasters.

  • Tightness might not be wrong, Lee's always complaining Phillip Oliver never puts his hand in his pocket to buy a round!!!

Oliver Twins have very kindly given Spectrum Computing permission to host their ZX Spectrum back catalogue. https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.php?cat=999&label_id=14468

Unfortunately the Oliver Twins don't own the IP and therefore don't have the right to give permission, so the permission is invalid and is therefore illegal for Spectrum Computing to host the games.

  • Dammit!

I loved the 128k version of Fast Food!
Infact I did a (pretty naff and unfinished) game based on Fast Food for the Amiga back in 93 (I think)
