What was the best compilation

I think :

product-90241.jpg

Which contained most of the Durrell good stuff.

Tape 1, side A 1. Saboteur! Durell Software Ltd
Tape 1, side B 1. Sigma 7 Durell Software Ltd
Tape 2, side A 1. Saboteur II Durell Software Ltd
Tape 2, side B 1. Turbo Esprit Durell Software Ltd
Tape 3, side A 1. Critical Mass Durell Software Ltd
Tape 3, side B 1. Combat Lynx Durell Software Ltd
Tape 4, side A 1. Thanatos Durell Software Ltd
Tape 4, side B 1. Bomb Jack II Elite Systems Ltd
Tape 5, side A 1. Deep Strike Durell Software Ltd
Tape 5, side B 1. Airwolf Elite Systems Ltd

Only thing it seems to be missing is Scuba Dive.

It sank without a trace! :)

    Sod it!

  • I remember getting this compilation from my local Woolworths. I'd forgotten the two Elite games on there, I'd misremembered it as purely Durell games. Great collection of games, but quite a flimsy cardboard box, if I recall.

  • Are we talking quality or quantity here ? :)

The problem with compilations is there's so much variation (as you would expect) depending on what game types you prefer. I can't say I have anything really specific in mind although a 'mixed bag' of say 8 to perhaps 12 titles would be nice.

Question: Are we talking about compilations you could buy or ones that 'appeared' to only be bundled with machines ? If the latter then this:

For sheer quantity, and some of them are quite decent titles.

    This too actually:

The Durell 'big box' stuff is pretty good, I recall having purchased one of these 'back then' as the 'sold a million' compilations I could not find at that time, I wanted one of those iirc.

    There can be only one.

In Spain it could be 'Dinamic Quinto Aniversario' (Dinamic Fith Anniversary). Twelve games, most of them considered classics at the time. It also included an illustrated manual. I'm not sure if sales were good, Dinamic released at least two other compilations around the same time.

There was another one quite popular, maybe because it was featured on a TV ad (as far as I know the one and only computer game ad of the era). It was called 'Erbe 88'. Erbe was the main game distributor in Spain that also had their own game studio, almost a monopoly.

The only great game in there was Operation Wolf, of course, but all of the rest except Chicago 30's were decent games

    Also +1 to Magnificent Seven

This took a while to appreciate the quality of the games:

  • Surprised no one has mentioned Horizons :p

Soft-Aid is a good sensible choice too, although I can see why it was likely picked it does not contain (well not all of them at least) brilliant games. At that time "BITD" it was the first time I'd seen or heard of most of the games within though. It was worth its value. :)

I think this ought to be split a bit more in that are you including compilations that were not for sale but included as a bundle with a machine ? I'm only really talking about the ones we have listed here on WOS rather than anything that only a certain retailer in a certain area might of done.

Some of the Beau-Jolly compilations look quite reasonable too actually, and there's a fair few of them. I don't actually recall seeing any of these in the shops back then either, shame or I may of purchased one or more back then.
  • I remember seeing Soft Aid on the shelves for £4.99 next to full-price copies of Ant Attack, Kokotoni Wilf etc...

The Beau Jolly games were definitely available at retail as I have at least one I picked up in a bargain bin.
  • Ultimate's: Collected Works has to be in with a shout.
  • +1 for The Magnificent Seven

The first Now Games was good too: Lords of Midnight, Brian Bloodaxe, Strangeloop, Pyjamarama, Arabian Nights and Falcon Patrol 2.

Ok, the last two were meh and decent, but the first 4 are speccy classics.

Best of Elite Vol 1 had Bombjack, Commando, Frank Bruno’s Bozing and Airwolf. Three classics and that one-screen wall-shooter ;)

We Are The Champions was also very good: Renegade, Rampage, IK+, Batbarian and Super Sprint.

Only one I had was the first They Sold a Million.

    Sabre Wulf
    Decathlon
    Jet Set Willy
    Beach Head

A pretty decent selection if you had just got a Spectrum

For nostalgic reasons I'd have said Computer Hits 3, but that would only really deseve a top spot if you switched out Show Jumping, Geoff Capes Strong Man, and Give my Regards to Broad Street with some actual games.

Although to be fair show jumping doesn't do a bad job of representing the erm...sport if you can call it that? It's just a bit sh*t to play. Geoff capes after all these years still has a nerve calling itself a game, and Martech had a bloody nerve releasing it at full price. Strangely enough Give my Regards to Broad Street is another not bad idea poorly executed, to get anywhere on the map you have to go breakneck speed, but the whole universe and it's uncle are out to obliterate your car and send you 255,000 miles back across the map, every time it happens.

I'd have thrown Juggernaut in the shitlist as well, but after all these years I can actually appreciate what they were trying to do with that game, and have actually gave it a second chance. Although I'll be honest, as a kid I did kind of enjoy just randomly driving around not having a clue what I was doing.

  • I never liked compilations. They had more loading problems than the original tapes.

Tough call. The other Dizzy compilation arguably had more, better games whereas that one was padded out with the arcadey rubbish. It did have two exclusives at the time though...
  • A vote for Taito Coinop Hits, BUT it was disappointing that Renegade 128k version was omitted, and had two Arkinoid games.
