Another old punk, External Menace just posted on facebook
Just had some bad news folks. Our old drummer Colin McNair has passed away. He played on half of the Pure Punk Rock album. Our thoughts are with his family. R.I.P. mate.

So firstly I just want to thank everyone for all the messages and phone calls to offer support and condolences over the last week or so. It has been an immensely difficult time since losing our bandmate and more importantly our great friend Bob on the 23rd of December. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. In Bob we've lost a person who always had our backs and who would do anything in his power to get you out of a hole. He had a tremendous wealth of knowledge and taught us all a great deal, there was very rarely a subject Bob hadn't an interesting insight into which made him a great person to spend time with. Bob took great pride in everything he did from music to his political endeavours. Others are far more qualified to speak on the latter than me and the Workers Solidarity Movement (Ireland) published a lovely piece on his political activity down through the years. Bob was an extremely talented and dedicated musician, he said to me in the last few months that there were those who played music because the wanted to and those who played music because they had to - there's no doubt which category Bob fell into.
The Jollars was founded as a band to provide support and backing to allow us to bring bands to Cork and keep the DIY punk scene and ethic alive in our area (and this was as far as our aspirations went!). Bob believed in this ethic wholeheartedly, bringing bands to you city or town no matter the size of the place. He believed in treating people as you would want to be treated as could be testified by the many travelling bands and other travelling punks, skins and weirdos that graced his house over the years. There was always a warm welcome, a hot pot of food, a cold beer and a place to sleep for everyone - he would even sacrifice his bed more times than not.
Having spoken to various people in Bob's life to gauge how people thoughts on the subject of whether to carry on with the upcoming RIXE gigs next week we have decided that these gigs should carry on needless to say without ourselves playing. Our hope would be that everyone who knew Bob from whatever facet of his life would come out to gigs and raise a glass and share your memories of him. We will be making the trip around the country and would especially like to see those who couldn't make his funeral.
Cork has changed a lot in the last few years, with some losses in milestones in The Jollars story such as the worst practice room you could imagine in Thompson House where we wrote and practiced our record to the loss of the infamous Gone Offie to progress. But it has now changed utterly to think our man Bob won't be sitting in the shadow of Shandon cursing the feckers ringing the bells.
So, goodbye from Cork's greatest ever Oi! band... by default (our favourite self deprecating joke)...
R.I.P. Bob Kavanagh - to quote a man that we discussed quite regularly and could sum it up far better than I could, Flann O'Brien "his like will never be seen again". You will never be forgotten.

I would "who?" but am afraid you'll actually tell me... in detail.
In that case..I will. Sam was his spirit guide. A red indian! That'll get me sacked if I get famous in 5 years time on youtube..red indian! Racist! AKA noble indigenous people(but not that indigenous..but quite indigenous..but pre-colon anyway) of North America. HOW! Well.. yes A red indian ..like One Man bucket. He could tell Derek everything..except numbers in which case Derek had to do giant hand motions in the air in the vague outline of numbers. Sam was pretty good at surnames though...and also good at popping into the local library presumably in the otherworld to research on wherever Derek was. That was not as dodgy as it seems cause even Sam knows that Derek had to come up with something on the show..and Sam likes a show. There..I no speak with forked tongue.
I don't like mediums, fakes the lot of em and they prey on desperate people. Sack em all I say, well actually my spirit guide 'Littlest Hobo' says that....
Just seen this, absolutely shocked and upset. One of my favourite bands and probably the best rock drummer ever.
Rush is now on loop all weekend in memory of this legend.
