buying a water flosser from them and recommending root cleanings
An irrigator is a great tool to have. I’ve had one for many years now and I’m pretty happy with it. Scaling and root planing is also something I wouldn’t mind going through occasionally. It’s best to keep your dental pockets clean and as shallow as possible.
That thing about pulling your wisdom teeth, though, I don’t get. Sure, if they’re growing sideways and cause malocclusion or deform your dental arches, they need to go; but I’ve never understood this obsession of some dentists to pull out them as soon as possible.
Every man should plant a tree, build a house, and write a ZX Spectrum game.
I went to a private dentists 10 years ago and not been to one since. I went their with terrible tooth ache due to breaking a tooth. They wanted to do root canal to stop the pain and allow me to keep the tooth after repair. Asked how much that would cost, over £1000. Then asked how much for an extraction, £75. Guess which I chosen.
Yeah, root canals are super-expensive. if you look at what's involved it's not all that surprising.
This year I spent £500 in one sitting. My two front teeth over the years some of the enamel had worn away and because I didn't get it seen to early enough they were unsightly (in my eyes anyway). There was no damage and certainly wasn't going to rot the teeth but I hated them enough to hide them whenever possible.
Dentist said he could put a veneer on them at £250 per tooth. Was completely sick of them so had the job done. Took a good hour and a half but the dentist was brilliant and I'm delighted with the results. The colour matching is perfect.
My whole life I have been terrified of the dentists. So much so that when I was a little boy my father tried his best to find one that I wouldn't come away from as a quivering wreck. Once he even took me to a Harley St. dental surgeon (apparently if it costs a lot then he's a surgeon) but the end result was the same. I won't claim some special sensitivity to pain, in fact its the reverse, my pain tolerance is high so I guess its a psychological problem?
Truth is that I've always been hurt at every visit and its been ten years since the last one. They ALL refuse to give me gas or knock me out which I'd be fine with. I get loads of local injections and it simply doesnt do the job. Ever since moving to the US I've only seen a dentist three times in over 40 years mainly thanks to the outrageous prices they ask. I'd love to have them all out, I've lost loads of them from rot and breakage anyway.
My terror of the whole thing is real and the costs are prohibitive. I sometimes think if anything was to make me take an overdose of whatever it is one takes to get a painless exit, I'd do it rather than go to another dentist.
Fear of dentists and fear of bills. While in NHS I had a student dentist with me for weeks..and though he was only 18, he was already foaming at the mouth with greed. I said..why don't you be a GP or something, but he said..not enough money!
I only ever got two filling but I had two Abcesses or Fistula on the back top teeth. One at age 18 and one last March. These were unbelievably painful..jump in a volcano kind of pain. I got pretty good teeth..and if checked I could be worth 4 beans. Only ever paid for a teeth clean every 6 months. HOLLYWOOD!
Dentist said he could put a veneer on them at £250 per tooth. ..
Best £500 I ever spent.
250 per tooth? have you not heard of tippex?
:)) Not with the colour of my teeth. They're not stained but a off-white colour that I have my mum to thank for inheriting.
I know it seems mad being pleased with paying that amount out, but the confidence boost it gave me is priceless. Covering your mouth with your hand every time you smile is just awful.
I've been to the dentists today. I have another broken tooth, well I broke it about 5 years ago. It's never given me any pain till the last couple of days. The tooth has been slowly crumbling away and now there's a large hole in it. I went to the same private dentists I went to about 10 years ago. The dentist seem alright and wasn't judgemental as I know I should of visited them much sooner. He still mentioned about saving the tooth with root canal treatment(loads of £'s), but after seeing an x-ray of the tooth he said there was no option but to extract it. The tooth has become so infected that the infection has gone right down into the root of the tooth where it goes into the jaw bone. So not good. Going back next week for the extraction which the dentist says he needs to take a bit of time with due to the tooth being weak and might break up if he just pulled it out.
I've only seen a dentist three times in over 40 years. I'd love to have them all out, I've lost loads of them from rot and breakage anyway.
Well, if you took more care of your teeth and went to the dentist more often than every 10-13 years, then perhaps they wouldn't rot or break. Just sayin'.
Well Sokurah you don't live in America do you? I could have added quite a lot more but why bother? I hope you feel better for having made that sanctimonious comment. Tells me a lot about you.
My dentist struck me off 2 years ago when i failed to book check ups :))
Problem is though i have a false tooth at the front and at a night out just after New Year i bit into a deep fried mars bar (first time trying it and it wasn't as disgusting as i thought) and i broke so i spent the rest of the evening trying not to laugh.
I went to a dental technician and he said a new one would cost £100! For 1 tooth! There was another material he could make one that was more durable that would cost £200! I was like no way. But i took the broke one and he said he could repair it, that cost £40 which was better but i have a feeling it won't last long.
He was the same guy i went to to get the original false tooth but he can't remember me but it was about 14 years ago!
I had "Bruxism" combined with not giving a hoot for years. Ground them down to nothing and then they fell to pieces.
Where I live I eventually had to spend a lot of money to get my dentist to just rebuild them with HERCULITE(the tooth coloured filling stuff). They're kind of alright now.....kind of. Don't hurt anyway so that's a win.

After years of never having any "real" trouble with my teeth I may literally have to have my front 2 teeth fixed or replaced. It makes me sad a bit, as even though all my front teeth were chipped or a bit broken from mosh pit, fighting, young stupid sh*t type incidents none of the damage was visible. However though because of the roughness of the chips on my lower teeth they've started to wear away at the backs of my 2 front teeth at the top, my dentist warned me about this almost a year ago. He then said we can ignore it for now, but 2-3 years from now if you've not had it fixed it may be beyond the point of no return.
Recently I've noticed if I run my tongue across the back of my 2 front teeth I can feel a line around about the middle of them. Then a few weeks back while I was eating a bowl of noodles I clacked the bowl off one of my front teeth and chipped it again, this time it's visible, my front tooth looks jacked up, and it's made me a little self conscious tbh, and I've never really been the vain type, but it's bothering me a bit now.
Anyway, my next dentist appointment is up soon, and I'm sure given that incident he's going to push for me to fix my front teeth ASAP.....I will, but I hate the idea of doing so....
If you have health insurance it’s moderately priced, but I have no idea if my insurance would cover me getting my front teeth sorted as I’m sure it will be classed as cosmetic vs medically necessary. But a check up every 6 months for me and the wife cost us about $25. Bumps up to about $40 if the take x-rays.
I think if you’re on welfare you can get basic dental stuff paid for, but you still have to be on some kind of plan to do so.
Seems quite pricey over there, one day i may move to the US as i'm getting friendly with a woman from Illinois but don't fancy living in the mid West, our winters are nothing compared to them.
I'll need to buy a straw hat and drive a combine harvester :))
It cost me $600 to get an extraction and I had health insurance. I guess its up tp the plan you have? However my previous visit for cleaning and filling back in 1985 cost me $200 with a good plan.
My problem is I suck at paper work can't understand it, don't like it. When my wife whos an RN got full medical for the both of us it almost cut her take home pay in half.
Its this side of America I have always hated, I remember how much better it was in the UK in the 60's. With PAYE you never had to go near tax forms, with Nat Health there was never any expense.

If you actually moved to Illinois you'd literally only be a few hours away from me, we could meet up and take the p*ss out of all the Americans who can't understand my Geordie, and your Scottish accent.
Dunno how the winters are in Illinois as such, as crazily enough it literally changes by state, Missouri could literally get 14 ft of snow, Illinois will get torrential rain, Kentucky will have a tornado, and we'll have sunshine and mild breezes, even though it's literally 3 hours away in either direction :))

$600 for an extraction??? I had my wisdom tooth out a few years and it was about £50.
Yeah Boozy we could sit and get **** and rip the **** out of Americans :))
The woman i'm talking to loves my accent and likes me to talk about anything, it kills her when i give her my ned impression :))
She loves Scotland and she hopes to be over this year and we'll hook up and see what happens - she wants to try 'scottish things' like our square sausages, irn bru and wants to visit a castle.
Well there you go you're onto a win, although Missus Boozy hates me doing the charva voice "Arrrr here mon I'll puar chow the very off yer' y' f*ckin' doilum" :))
I'm sure where you are it's "Oooh hee whaaa yeee deein' y' Daftee!" ;)
Sh*t I'll come back to the UK and shag you if I can have some Lorne Sausage :))
I f*ckin' love that stuff, and I have no idea why it's not popular anywhere else in the world, it's f*ckin' sandwich shaped FFS!!! It's f*ckin' PERFECT!!!! ;)
Oh aye!....and teeth as well, figured I should keep it on topic :))
Boozy - i'll bring some Lorne and corned beef with me, no sex required :)
I remember my dentist saying (just before i was struck off) that one my filling required attention and for the last few weeks i've been getting the occasional twinge. Might have to go back with my tail between my legs. I'm absolutely terrified of the dentist, i'd rather walk into a room full of spiders, that's how bad it is :(
I clacked the bowl off one of my front teeth and chipped it
That's like squeaky green beans........make it stop, please make it stop.

You know strangely enough back when I was doing Martial Arts I was approached, by this dodgy f*cker in one of my classes who said he thought my technique as a fighter was good, and if I'd be interested in doing a few underground fights.
Realistically though I'm soft as shite, so I told him I'd think about it, but never got back to him, was actually a bit freaked out by the whole situation to be honest :))
I'm a defender, not an attacker...Fight purse money would be nice, but I've seen them vids on the internet, don't fancy ever getting knocked out so hard I can't remember my own name, or how to count to 3, or how not to p*ss my pants afterwards :))
Although over the years I've been stabbed 3 times (The 3rd time technically doesn't count as it was an accident), hit in the head with a golf club, bottled, had 4 idiots at once kick the living sh*t out of me while I was on the floor, had a roof slate smashed over the back of my head while fighting 3 people in front of me at once, so who knows maybe I'm tougher than I think I am? But what it boils down to is I just don't like actually hurting people. I was a sadistic little f*cker when I was younger, but being on the receiving end of real actual violence, made me rethink how much of a prick I was being back then, and actually getting severely assaulted, made me think I wouldn't want to inflict that on anybody unless it was an absolute necessity, or a dire emergency.
I've not had a scrap since 2005, and my last semi-violent altercation was 2006, and I intend to keep it that way, both of those were self defense as well, so I wasn't looking for trouble.
Holy **** dude - you one bad mo fo! Back foot is def the best attack given space to do so but wow. I'll upgrade the pit fighter to a full on RAMPAGE.

Oh I dunno? I can laugh about this stuff now, but looking back I always wonder if I could've done things differently, I didn't obviously. But I always tried to stay out of trouble, it just liked me so much it followed me around, the b*stard….
