Free screen-grabbing software?
Anyone here know of any decent free software that'll allow me to record what's going on on my desktop? I used to use CamStudio, but I can't seem to get it working properly in Win7. I was about to search for another freebie, but I thought I'd ask here first, just to save me downloading loads of cack that doesn't do what it says it does.
Thanks in advance.

Look on the left of the page and one of the links there is for screen recording software. I've not used it but I have used lots of their other software and their stuff is always really good.
I use that in win7 64 bit
and use nch convertor or something to make it into a flash / flv.
I need to use it to make some tutorial things for music s/ware I use.
Cheers matey, I'll give that a go in a wee while.
Like I say, I've tried CamStudio, but it just doesn't seem to work for me. Once I've finished recording, it crashes without saving the file.
Can you record a tutorial for Reason 5 please? I've just started using it, after using ACID for 8 years or so... it's like I've started all over again, I've no idea what's happening. Took me about an hour to figure out how to make a single loop.
don't think it's completely free, but there is a restricted version you could try
must be a souff london thing, my friend in rotherhide is like you.nice setup he has, but doesn't know the software so well..
I think octo rex was a waste of time tbh. but get eXodes packs for thor etc. they are great
I signed up / paid for a year of for http://www.groove3.com/
as I use a lot of the things they list.
http://www.groove3.com/str/mt30.html , might still work, if your lucky it will
Cheers dude, but it needs to be a completely free one, just so I don't have the name of the software in the frame (which fraps does, if I remember rightly).
I've only really played about with Redrum so far. I'm liking the fact that you can easily make your own kits... I really need to record our band's drummer's kit when I next head down to the studio, haven't found any realistic sounding live kits in any of these plugins/refills so far.
Ta very much for the info/links.
reason drums v2 , unless you are an expert at micing up kits.. might as well get them playing a midi kit. I have record also, thats more suited to live recording.. but well I only got that as the upgrade for reason made it cheap. I use loops mainly for what I do, Shawn Lee did a pack years ago planet of the breaks of slower tempo stuff. http://www.zero-g.co.uk/index.cfm?articleid=786
Jason McGerr / KJ sawaka's packs .. It really depends on the genre of music I guess.
I'm not, but I know a man who is, and luckily he's agreed to let me borrow him and his gear for a day.
:p
Thanks Andy, I'm about to try that one... the one Itsallgood pointed me to doesn't seem to work very well in fullscreen (works great windowed though), which is a shame as the interface is nice and easy to use.
No, I've all but given up on Second Life...
Oh that's a shame, mate. As I said I haven't tried it. Ah well - maybe one of the others listed here will work :)
No worries fella, cheers for the help anyway.
I've just tried AndyC's suggestion. That's the ticket, many thanks.
... don't worry, it's nothing naughty.
Sweet! Thanks! There are a few other things on that page that'll come in handy at work.
OK so I've been thinking about making some gaming vids, but I've always kind of been put off, because free screen cap stuff usually has a low quality, or watermarks your vid with something.....
So I thought I'd type screen capture, screen cap, screen grab, screen record, screen recording, and so on into the Windoze 10 start bar....Nothing, just google links. So I'm like OK no freebie software after all these years...la la la....
Until I see Microsoft Game Bar has a screen recorder posted on some random site.....
So I type into the windoze 10 search bar "Game Bar"......Erm Microsoft literally included a screen recorder in the Game Bar.....and it's good....As far as I can tell it only let's you record full screen which is OK for PC games, Sega Saturn, Mame, or any emu that emulates a system that was fullscreen, but I'd like to record sections of the screen for something like GBA, or any handheld. Not sure if you can actually single out sections of the screen with it? I will experiment, but really Microsoft literally included a decent screen capper with windoze 10.
I thought it was problematic at first cos' even when you open it up, as soon as you click on something else it vanishes, but I dug around, and found if you have something running fullscreen...If you hit the Windows key + G it brings it up whilst running stuff fullscreen.
Seemed like a good find, and a worthy bump for an old thread rather than making a new one....
Did it on 1 credit, but you can see me struggling with the controls, so used to playing it on Saturn, or Arcade, or even PS1, my raging demon never connected, every time I missed or got knocked out of it. Kept trying to use R1, and R2 as HP and HK, but there is no R1 or R2 on a SNES Just L + R....My brain was not liking it. My combos weren't coming out, I was all over the place.
But I still got the buggers :))
I especially liked SFA3 on the Saturn (due to the great controller that just has the perfect button layout for SF games), but when it comes to consistency I think the SNES D-Pad is the best. I noticed when playing any of the older SF games, my specials tend to be much more reliable on the SNES. I drop a lot more combos on other controllers, but that's also because the later games are a bit more strict with combo timings. Never fancied practicing stuff like "1 frame links".
Ah, good old Raging Demon eh. Once I played a friend and he tried to do it on me, and purely by accident I threw him as he was approaching, he couldn't believe it :))
We really should play each other before we shuffle off our mortal coils.
I also only discovered recently that you can record proper video (as opposed to the short 30-second clips that I assumed were all they did) on both PS4 and Xbox. :)
I have a capture card for recording anything not current gen. I'm pretty much covered for recording gameplay. :D
You can turn the volume down in the capture settings. :)
The free version allows up to 5 mins of recording (I think)
