This forum software is shite. It doesn't show you you you've started a thread when you've hit save and won't let you delete the thread cos you've posted twice.

  • I'd like a post numbers #nnnn feature to be able to make reference to other posts, and a little bit longer to edit my posts. But I mustn't grumble as I haven't paid a penny to WOS. Is there a donation section - I don't mind sending a fiver if it were to go to new software. I guess its a big task to move from one forum software to another? I think my difficulties with making double posts is that the little cog which brings up the edit menu is close to the Quote link, and I sometimes hit the wrong one.

  • Something that annoys me about this forum, which I've mentioned before, is that the Mark All Viewed link doesn't return anything for ages so the browser just sits there spinning while the server does god-knows-what for ages unless you click some other link instead. I just clocked it at over 11 seconds!

Honestly I think it would be much easier if each post in a thread had a number, and you could put that number in your current post if you are refering to your own or someone elses earlier post, and click it and get taken to the post in the thread.

  • But it does have a number... Do you mean if it automatically turned numbers into links like how it auto embeds youtube links? e.g. typing something like #964929 would link to your post.
  • Ok, sorry, see that now - how do I insert time stamp, post number into my post - I am a bit dumb?

Ok thats not bad, but was thinking just a #nnnn number visible for each post in the current thread - from no.1 to whatever. So something like when you put #123 in your post it becomes a link others can click on - taking them to post number 123 in the current thread.

Well you could post just the fragment identifier in url tags but that would break if quoted onto the next page. #Comment_964933. Best to post the whole link instead. You can always give it alternative text.

That's more to do with the size of the forum.

Its better than the old one. :)

I do miss the post counter, I know its under our profile, but I remember when it appeared in posts, if only because if was funy/pathetic in a good way when members would be congratulated for reaching 2000, while the signal to noise ratio was very poor. I think Miles and Beans were two prolific posters at that time circa 2004/5.

When I first joined we had one even older than that circa 2002, ooh my.

Rather than that I miss the "Location" field, it always was interesting too see what places people come from.

VB3 still relatively good (but very old and no longer updated now past working with php7.0.x***) , for example no built in proper mobile view.

*** Boring: It can be made to work with 7.3 at least, if not higher if you don't mind editing php but lets not go there.

Always a case of swings/roundabouts when moving between any forum software platform, regardless of from/to what, there's always some differences. There's things I prefer with the old one and things I prefer with the new, probably similar to many.

Could waffle on about the pro's / con's of this vs other but its pointless so I'll not. I did not spend about 10 odd years being a dev/quality/beta tester for no reason for a certain forum software company lol, and no twas not anything mentioned in this topic.

Same as XTM i miss the post count and location details as well. Perhaps in the new forum these features will return.

    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • Different software works differently (no surprise there lol) in that on some if on the board index page (list of forums) or perhaps forum view (list of topics) you click the topic title you are taken to the first*** post in the topic, if you click the date you are taken to the last post.

To complicate matters a bit more, "first post" can mean 'first you've not read' in some cases too.
  • Maybe someone could ask Lee to include these features in the new website.
