Really annoying that that nice burberry check pattern became symbolic in a way of anti-social youth culture. But in another sense its not symbolic of anything other than being a popular pattern that the company tried to bring back from its early days. And anyone could wear that check design - and in fact they did to some extent manage to shake off the "chavy check" assoc. (see photo) - I don't know - maybe we should just take it back. Jokes about it tends to perpetuate the association. I wonder could I get away with it? I suppose providing I don't also wear jeans, or baggy pants with the crotch at the knees, or make index finger and little finger hand signs!! :-))

I had to stop wearing my nice Lonsdale top back in the 80s that my mum got me one christmas as a little extra pressy. Because it lost its original association with boxing and picked up a more nefarious association. Even with only a little chest emblem rather than one of the tops with the letters emblazoned across the middle - I continued to wear it for a bit - but it became impossible - others said the same to me that they had had to stop wearing Lonsdale.

Oh sorry, I meant the golden toilet, not the chavtastic one - had been thinking about the gold one that was stolen when I seen the gold toilet roll.

I think the company has managed in recent years to cast off that association that in no way they had encouraged - so I won't mention it again.

Lonsdale clothing is traditionally associated with Boxing and after the Earl of Lonsdale who introduced gloves to the boxing sport.

They were local lads when I went to Uni in Wales, very popular with some students who saw them for what they were, a fun caricature.

    Awwwww

Child says to passerby : "I can't find my mummy."

Passerby : "What's your mummy wearing? - nevermind I've found her."

Well the solution here is simple - introduce the chap to chavvy check wallpaper - then he will just disappear - or you just see a grinning face like a chessire cat. :-))

"Chavvy Check" overload - clearly this thread has set the pattern back another ten years.

Not that I am one for brands as such, but did Burberry make all those "accessories"?

  • We currently have a chav active here on WOS - his avatar hints at it ;)
  • Wearing burberry check doesn't make you a chav. Its wearing nothing but burberry check that does :-))
  • Pretty sure there were plenty of chavs who didn't care about Burberry whatsoever ... check this picture for example, some fine specimen yet no Burberry to be seen.

By the way, while searching for a suitable pic I came across this - a flickr post (from back in 2008, mind you) showing German chavs. To be honest I didn't see people looking like that often, they must have been a little rarer than their British counterpart. This photo was taken in Berlin too ("Alexanderplatz" station name in the background), I bet there's a lot of scum there.

Not sure I'd like to be at some of the uber refined (rarified) society gatherings either <:-P - well maybe just once to see how the other half live - as long as they don't morph into something ... weird! :-O

  • My goodness this thread has gone from movies about epidemics to golden toilet roll to chavvy check to Alexanderplatz station to to uber high society - lol. Your honor the thread was off topic when I took it off-off topic .

Now what was this thread about?

    Oh yes:

I’m feeling a Hollywood spin would be more like 28 days later.

28 Days Later : that was more a Danny Boyle spin - not quite typical of hollywood hokum. Though I could see Hollywood trying (unsuccessfully) to imitate it - but I suspect they'd be loath to part with the typical set pieces - earthquake - big laboratory control room - test tubes falling over and smashing :-O , monkey escapes :(|), scientists doing the funky gibbon \:D/, lots of panic - swat teams - killer clowns :O) and Morgan Freeman B-)

  • I watched 28 Days Later for only the second time a few weeks ago. First time was probably about 2003 so I'd forgotten much of it. Was watching on a tablet with a pair of headphones, totally secluded within myself, lounging on the couch sipping a cup of tea and it's got to the bit in the church.

Cue Cillian Murphy calling "Hello" and those two zombies in the piles of corpses suddenly look up. Almost **** myself and throw half a cup of hot tea straight into my face.

The missus nearly wet herself, laughing.

Oh my, you are right - that was very sudden and unexpected that bit - I thought they were folks who had taken sanctuary but that they all had died - the scene lingered on the lifeless bodies for a good half a minute - then all of a sudden a couple of them react to his "hallo" !!

  • Actually as I wrote this discussion, I expected it to go way of target and I'm not disappointed. The title really defines it as what are the odds, so work on that if you will. :)

  • You mean like, what are the odds of a WOS thread not going off-topic? Yeah, winning the lottery is much more likely I think $-)

Btw is it just me or are the vast majority of smilies never quite fitting for what you want to use? Most of the time I end up using the same 3 or 4 ...

I am trying to resize a image from another webpage using the following BBCode - is this the right syntax - because it still appears full size when I use it?

i have omitted the square bracket at start and end so the image doesn't appear
