  • I haven't got a wooden telly, but I do have a rather ancient looking GT64 green screen monitor for my Amstrad 464.

Utter beautiful crap is a very good way to put it. That's the funny thing about TV from that era, it was crap with the occasional gem episode, but most of us loved it oddly. I think partly it was the wonderment of the technology of color TV and special effects effects and other technological gimmicks which were all new back then. I think also in 1977 the double act, was the hot thing to be, we had:
    Morecambe and Wise,
    Two Ronnies,
    Little and Large,
    Cannon and Ball,
    Less Dennis and Dustin Gree,
    and many more....

I think it was the success of Morecambe and Wise which exited the TV execs at the time and set the mold for the then epitome of Saturday night comedy.

Talking of the wonderment of the technology brings be back to Saturday night TV with Noel Edmond's who loved flouncing around with Smitty in helicopters, mobile wireless cameras, outside broadcasts and satellite linkups and all live. When you think about it, it was an honor to have all those 100s, maybe 1000s, of people all working hard to bring that seamless picture and sound to your home right at that moment. It most have cost a foocking bomb, something that Netflix and Youtube will never be able replace and something we are likely never to have again, because its just so expensive and not the kind of thing that would impress these days.

The Two Ronnie's The Worm That Turned Sketch they serialised on their Sunday Night Show back in the 80's is especially hilarious if you watch it now! Comic Genius's? Time Travelers? Or just 2 older guys who saw where the world was heading almost 40 years ago. Seriously watch it, and look at how things are today.

I think the female Storm Troopers are even called Feminazis? :))

It's f*cking hilarious, and I remembered it like the back of my hand, from when I was a kid, and I pulled it up and watched it a few years back after all the weird "All men are evil" type sh*t that's been kicking around the net for the last decade or so. the way things are now watching that series of skits is almost as funny as their Mastermind spoof they did when they answered 1 question ahead.

Even give Fork Handles a run for it's money ;)

  • Am I the only person on the planet who never thought much of Morecambe and Wise? Just never found them particularly funny. Even now I just want to punch Ernie in the face - he's got an eminently punchable one.

The Two Ronnies on the other hand were quite simply geniuses. That Mastermind sketch is seriously funny.
  • I did prefer the Two Ronnies over Morecambe and Wise, much funnier. But Morecambe and Wise did sometimes make me smile.

I think part of it was which generation you were.

Of course, back then when Mum or Dad wanted to watch telly, us kids had to watch whatever they were watching, as there was only one TV...

Later on, a black and white TV appeared, which allowed us kids to use our colour ZX Spectrum. Did not watch much TV on that, because there was no aerial lead to the roof top aerial. Had to play around with the loop aerial. And of course the picture would disappear when me or anyone else in the room, or outside the room moved...

We had a Pye Rambler for our spectrum which I think as a 12" Screen. I never liked using it and always wanted my Spectrum in color. Thankfully later on in about 85/6 we got a color Portable.

Don't think the BBC ever got over the demise of Morecambe and Wise as they still show them every Christmas, never really found them funny but i loved The Two Ronnies - much more cheeky.

I remember the Worm that Turned, I have re-watched it a time or two online.

  • With the way YouTube are these days bending the knee to everyone who cries about anything, and pretending they care about what’s going on in the world I’m surprised they haven’t taken that video down for being offensive and banned the user’s account :))

  • Morecambe and Wise were a bit more old-school entertainers. And probably the best at it, so deserve the affection.

But The Two Ronnies were my favourites! While they also did a lot of those dress-up, song-and-dance, and special guest routines, they also created so many genius sketches and added their own unique skills too. Ronnie Barker wrote a lot of that really clever material himself, and of course the satirical series like "The Worm that Turns" were way ahead of their time.

I don't know, while some stuff is blocked because of sexual or violent content, or requires you have to sign in to few it, it would probably have to be reported first for it to appear on their radar so to speak.

My wife was talking about the TV we grew up with. She talked of the the US tv series Friends because she's younger than me and a yankie. I never did get that series or any other us sitcom of the period, and found the humor self satisfied, smug but actuallty very flat.

So then I put on some vintage Cannon and Ball on youtube, expecting her to hate it. Within a few minutes she was laughing out loud and taking about how the kids would like it.
