  • I second that, I have fond memories of Stop the Cavalry. Followed by Fairytale of New York.
    Sod it!

I not sure I heard this quite as an anti-war song when I was a kid, I thought stop the cavalry was from the perspective of what it was like to be a footsoldier.

I see it was about the Charge of the Light Brigade

  • My faves are Greg Lake - I Believe In Father Christmas, and Chris de Burgh - A spaceman came traveling.
  • I remember reading somewhere that Jonah Lewie never intended stop the cavalry to be an actual Christmas song. But it was perceived that way just because of the line I wish I could be home for Christmas. Not sure how much truth is in that statement due to the time it was released, and let’s face it that brass band, and all those bells certainly make it sound like a Christmas song.

It morphed into a christmas song. At the begginning when Lewie was composing it though he had in mind a protest song. It was the record company that picked up on the line you mentioned, wanted to make it more christmassy, and suggested adding some tubular bells to the arrangement. See story behind the song link above.

  • Fairytale of New York and Baby Please Come Home (the original Darlene Love version) are probably my favourites. :)

There's this song by a band whose name also was used by a Speccy music program, now what were they called again? ... ah, there's my coat!

  • 2000 Miles by The Pretenders and Fairytale of New York are my favourites.
  • Do They Know It's Christmas (original version obvs.). I also like Stay Another Day by East 17.

    There, I've said it.
  • I think Maria Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" is probably the ultimate.

But I've always had a soft spot for "Driving Home For Christmas" by Chris Rea.
Without fail, every year there's some time that I'm in the car going home from a busy day's Christmas shopping or one of the last drives from work to start the holidays and it comes on the radio. It always completely captures the mood and I just can't help singing along to it!

Except for this year of course, because I'm stuck at home the whole time and have gone nowhere... :(
Gift shopping has been mostly online and I'm working from home.
Maybe I'll get lucky when I'm out buying a turkey sometime this week! B-)
  • Way things are going I think Road to Hell would be a better Chris Rea choice...

I was expecting the worst but to my surprise Mel, I enjoyed that so much I played it over again to listen to the surprisingly good arrangement, really good mixture. Thanks.

I'm so glad nobody has mentioned Wizzard! That song needs to go away, but they're playing a modern cover of it on the radio at work, by some American Twonk. Every time I hear it I hate it more than the original which I literally despise! Wonder if the people here hearing that sh*te though have even heard the original? If not they should count themselves lucky they haven't had to listen to that a thousand times a day, everywhere you go, for the last 6 weeks of the year, every year, for the last 40 years!

I think I may hate "I wish it could be Christmas every day", more than I Hate "Last Christmas" by Wham! That's a hard one to top, I've hated that song pretty much since it was out, although Last Christmas is a few years younger than Wizzard's aural torture, so Roy Wood's literal only source of income has had a bit longer to fester.....

Roy Woods daughter (Holly - yeah, Roy and his wife went there) used to live in the house opposite. Will never forget leaving the house one day and Roy was standing by his car. I must have stood there for a good ten seconds, stock still, like some starstruck idiot. He just waved and I went back to normal.

And it's also 9 years to the day that I was in the queue of a local mini co-op. People were being weird and peering around corners at me, teen girls giggling and whispering to each other. I said to the young bloke in front of me in the queue "they must be looking at you mate, I'm good looking but I ain't that pretty". He laughed and we had a little chat about what we were doing for Xmas. His girlfriend paid up, they went on their merry way and suddenly I'd got surrounded by about 10 people asking how I knew him. Hadn't got the faintest idea what they were talking about.

Turns out it was Liam Payne from One Direction who was visiting his folks for Xmas.

  • I tend to get Slade's and Wizzard's christmas hits mixed up in my head, ie who did which? I agree WIZZARD's I wish it could be christmas every day, could do with rest. It become a casualty of its own success. We got it on cassette from a box of Frosties years ago and it got played about 50 times over the christmas season that year. @-) In its favor I will say it was good for a number of years and it has a very christmassy feel, but over-exposure has taken a bit of the edge off it.
