Thanks! ZX1 for that clip of Purple doing Burn, my favourite band of all time. Love those classical riffs that Jon Lord always manages to fit into almost any song.
Dunno how I missed this first time, still better late than never, eh? I am also a fan of 'big hair'. Alas those days are long gone...
My mum saw them live during the Gillian years in the early 70's at Green's Playhouse in Glasgow and got arrested after the gig for kicking a security guard in the balls! :))
OK just finished the Mandalorian...Best Star Wars in about 23 years.....yup I said it!
...and hang on a sec.....Did the Mandalorian just retcon, or erase the new Trilogy with it's storyline? Oh my! :))
...But realistically let's hope it actually did cos' episodes 7-9 were complete sh*t anyway!
EDIT: One thing I wanted to say is I have no idea if it's make up or if he's just really aged terribly? But I had to literally watch the credits to see his name pop up to verify it was him, but Temeura Morrison really looks about 10000 years old now...I was like is that really "Jake the Muss"?
EDIT: EDIT: Just out of curiousity I've seen people mention the Clone Wars cartoon....looked it up and it's got 7 seasons each with 22 episodes...Is that the same cartoon that came out way back in about 2003? Or did they redo it? I watched all the episodes back then....But I'm sure they were only about 10 minutes long....

Great wasn't it? I thought it was the best thing they've done since Empire and it may well even have topped that - which is seriously saying something. It's a bit like how Cobra Kai has done it - fan service, but fan service by creators who thoroughly know the universe and really care about it. Plus no small amount of writing talent.
I had to check it actually was Temeura Morrison too.
Yup, that is the Clone Wars from 2008 (just looked it up). That ran until 2014 and in 2020 they released the final season for it. I remember watching the first few episodes when it first came out before giving up. I've only got through Season 1 so far and, apart from a couple of duffers, it's been highly enjoyable. So I want to get through it before my Disney+ subscription runs out.

There are two Clone Wars series.
The Genndy Tartakovsky one, which only ran for a couple of series of short episodes. This will be the one you saw.
We then got another that launched with a movie (of sorts, since it was initially episodes that were spliced together for cinema release). This begins with Anakin acquiring a new padawan, an annoying valley girl, and has a story about finding one of Jabba's baby kids. From that initial 'eeew' beginning, it turns into some of the best Star Wars around. Episodes vary somewhat, since it was supposedly a kids cartoon, so you'll get daft kid friendly episodes followed by pretty dark stuff. There are some brilliant characters and stories told across it, and Anakin's padawan Ahsoka becomes perhaps one of the strongest around, easily on a par with the 'main' ones from the OT. You met her briefly in The Mandalorian.
If you can suffer the crap episodes and the early non-linearity of the story telling, it's worth a watch if you're a fan. You do have to persevere at the beginning, but it's hard to say it isn't worth it in the end.
I think of it like Breaking Bad - that was so dull for most of the run time of each episode it's hard to recommend someone else should watch it, but I'm glad I got to meet those characters.
Oh, and there are a LOT of Clone Wars references in The Mandalorian, not least Ahsoka and Bo-Katan.
Still watching the queen season 4 and I must say Margret Thatcher, has been portrayed as very cold, non-subservient, and a bit of a nut job. I did not know about the rift between the two ladies on South Africa.
Watching some episodes of the first series of The Sweeney, one of the best police series from the UK, no happy endings like some these days. Lots of violence and bad language!
Did everyone in the 70's drive a Ford Cortina? :D
This is an interesting half hour video about how Basic got invented at Dartmouth and what it achieved in bringing computer programming to everyone not just scientists. It was all done by undergraduates!
Here's another view about Basic which completely ignores Sinclair! My comment to it was:-
Mike Dench 3 years ago
Well now I know why the Sinclair Spectrum was so much better than these!
Watched Greenland on Prime last night. Decent asteroid/comet impact movie that deals with the immediate aftermath of the strike. A little overlong but enjoyed it. I think the writers got some inspiration from the intro to The Last Of Us- much of the movie is I imagine what happens immediately after the prologue of TLOU finishes. Less the infected, of course :-)
OK, I've got a question for all the oldies out there (most of us?).
Now I'm sure those who lived in the UK during the 1970s will remember SuperStars,
with the likes of Brian Jacks breaking records. But can anyone remember a similar sports show with TV stars playing in teams? A bit like sports day but with celebs. What the hell was it called?
I watched a show where a group of millennials were shown some Carry On movies and they all said they were sexist and misogynistic and should be banned.
They forget this was a different generation with different attitudes. Sick of people trying to wipe out history.

I have a question, if SuperStars aired on the BBC how come it was sponsored by a brand such as Ferguson?
That is a very good point. However don't forget Racing had ciggie sponsorship during that time too and that was on BBC. Maybe that got stricter later on?

I agree. I've watched some of the later ones and they are cringe worthy. But they are what they are, I loved them as a kid and oblivious to the sexist undertones. Nothing to be proud of, but a good reminder of how bad some things in the 70s were and a warning to future generations. I'm sure we'll look back at some 20's stuff and cringe. But if we hide it all or worse delete it all, then there will be no record of the wrong doings.
I'm currently watching Drop the Dead Donkey. Today's episode had some of the crew from Jim'll Fixit in the news room, fixing it for a child to read the news. Now with hindsight, should they have removed that episode, just because it relates to that rs-ole? Maybe if 'he' appeared in it then yes, but its a contemporary sketch refering to a show that was relevant at that time.
I watched Armando Iannucci's 'The Personal History of David Copperfield'. It would seem he hired actors for their acting skills and not their looks / background as I've never seen such a diverse cast. It's a brilliant and modern approach to filming. However a tiny part kept saying
"18th Century Britain" didn't look like that".
A period drama done accurately can remind you of how arrogant and insular this country was back then, with racism and classism being part of everyday life.
However I'm all for hiring people for who they are and what they do and maybe this is the future of TV, where the accuracy of race is not important because after all, IT'S ONLY TV. :)
I recall an episode of a long forgotten program called "Emergency ward ten" which caused a hell of a ruckus because it dared to show an interracial kiss for only the second time on British TV the first instance was in the late 50's , this was around 1963 or 64 not quite sure now as memory is not what it was. I also recall a show from the 70's called "The Professionals" where a cast member was billed as "Handsome Negro" in the end credits.
Tony Hancock did a sketch with Sid James that involved looking after an orphan for Christmas and Hancock had the audience wetting themselves with the punchline " Kids are allergic to me..They get within three feet of me then they break out in bruises"

I can't help thinking the same... :-S
I'm all for increasing diversity in casting - let's face it, minorities have not had fair opportunities in the past. But I can't help feeling discombobulated when seeing historically inaccurate diversity in period or historical shows and films. It looks wrong and sets off my anachronism detector in the same way as someone unintentionally wearing a wristwatch or modern spectacles.
Diverse casting looks fine to me in contemporary or futuristic/fantasy settings (e.g. His Dark Materials), but having Black or Asian actors prancing about some 200-y-o royal court wearing frills, shocking wigs and powdered faces just looks wrong to me!
I feel bad thinking that way, but I guess I'm just wired to pick up when things seem out of place or time....

Thank God we've moved on from that.
I'm sure that episode of the Professionals was called Klansmen and wasn't shown for many years. I've also seen that clip on 'It was alright in the 60's' of the kiss. It caused a storm at the time.

No the episode was called Stakeout, set partly in a bowling alley and repeated many times.
I must be getting mixed up, The Professionals was a good show though. Made by the same production team that made The New Avengers, another good 70's show.
Been rewatching Games of Thrones from the beginning for the first time since I watched it originally, when I loved it so much I read all the books in the 18 month gap between the last two series.
I'd forgotten how good Season 1 was because originally the sheer number of characters was bewildering. But of course, I know who everyone is now! It really does keep very close to the book, and the first 4 or 5 seasons are a lesson in how to adapt a book series well. And the cast is great, considering how relatively unknown many of them were.
Of course, after that the final seasons got ahead of the books and had to made without their reference. So the narrative quality dropped and some of the character arcs went off the rails, but on the upside the budget grew and the spectacles got more amazing to watch. So at least we had that to enjoy, even if the story went kind of downhill.
We should still be grateful for what we got overall. I'm looking forward to binging season 2 now!
To me, the most surprising thing in the interview, was not anything they said, but the pictures of the headlines in the British media. Can't really believe that british media is so racist.
I've heard about those stories before, and that the relationship between the press and the royals are so much healthier here in the rest of Europe. But I never believed them. Now I do.

It has been 20 years since he did the prequels and he's just turned 60, I think we can cut him some slack.
