I'm looking for a particular sort of music. The problem is I'm not coming up with what I'm looking for because the terms are evidently too broad.
So, the music can basically be described as "found music" or "cassette tape" music. Meaning that the group or individual made the music themselves and quite often recorded on to cassette tape .Or the music is manipulated to sound distorted or fussy, like it's off of tape. I think the heyday of this music was in the 70's and into the 90's. The music is usually eclectic, odd-sounding, doesn't always follow regular arrangement, and more often than not, it's complete and utter crap.
I can't remember any specific names. I think the songs/albums I've heard were usually made by individuals, i.e. known by their names rather than a band name.
Any chance this is ringing bells? (MtB's end is ringalingtingling right as we speak! -Ed)
I was reading The All-Knowing Oracle's article on "outsider music" the other day. Is that the same thing?
At the very least, I'll recommend Smeg And The Heads. Their closest equivalent to a hit single, "Om", may be to your tastes. Although they're from the 2170s rather than the 1970s, the effect is much the same.
Thanks TMD. I discovered that algorithms have ruined searches (imho). When I want to be specific, the search machines have become wishy-washy, and using boolean operators(i.e. "", -, +, etc) doesn't clear up searches like it used to just a few years back. Yes, it works to a degree but it feels like I was able to eventually get to what I wanted back then but now it's like doing the exact same search from then does not give me the same results now.
Anywho ... yes, your suggestion "outsider music" brought me to "cassette culture" and "cassette underground" which is where I was headed. Or even "DIY music" or "self published" but the specific genre I was searching for is/was called "cassette underground". And that is where the problem arises ... A few years back, this search would have been specific but is now washed out due to people flooding youtube and the like with similar names for their playlists/songs. Bah and bumhug!

Queen a: Night at the Opera - US Pressing on Elektra label. So far I am disappointed by the definition.
Is it wrong for me to say that other than a couple of very good standout hits, this album is pretty mediocre.
Nah, you're not wrong and this is coming from a massive Queen fan. The majority of their albums aren't that good really taken as a whole. Aside from Jazz which is great all the way through and News of the World has a decent A side. I do have a soft spot for A Kind of Magic. Initially I thought it was rubbish but after seeing Highlander it weirdly transformed it.
The rest of the albums have tracks that are a good 70% meh. But it's the other 30% that range from very good to sheer musical brilliance/genius. Add all those 30%'ers together and you have a track list that most bands who've ever existed would die to have on their resume.
To this day I can't bring myself to listen to Made In Heaven again (listened to it once). Just too painful the memory of Freddie, knowing he had gone when it was released. Bloke had so much talent it was obscene.

glad it's not just me, I love queens singles and big songs but don't play full albums, hence I like the greatest hits albums and love the flash Gordon soundtrack lp

I'm exactly the same. The first Greatest Hits album is quite simply astonishing quality. It's basically an album of the greatest tracks 1974-1981. And I mean across the musical board, not just Queen.
Dearly wish I could have seen the original line up live. Just not the same with Adam Lambert and Paul Rogers, although they've done well. Queen missed a trick in not hiring George Michael. His performance at the Freddie Mercury tribute still sends tingles down the spine.

Queens Greatest Hits is one of my fallback albums. I've owned since the mid 80s and have played it regularly since. I totally agree with you guys its a great album.

Interesting to hear your Queen opinions, because I've been a die-hard fan since Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975! You might think that decades of dissemination might have clouded my memories, but despite being only 7 at the time, I still remember first watching the video on TOTP and being blown away!
My parents actually bought a lot of Queen singles after that and also The News Of The World album, so I was practically raised on their music! We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions have obviously been over-used almost to the point of parody, but back in 1977 they were truly, originally anthemic!
Then in the 80s I collected all their albums myself. It wasn't very cool at the time to be a Queen fan, but I have no regrets! Not all of their album tracks were brilliant, but I still love the albums as a whole. In fact, I haven't listened to them all for a while, and must rectify that!
I'm of the mindset that no matter how old you are, no matter how young you are, no matter when you were born! If you don't like anything queen did you're a piece of sh*t!
The Bohemian Rhapsody movie was excellent by the way, the live aid concert at the end end almost brought me to tears because I was there and watching it when it happened! OK I was about 5 at the time! But age is irrelevant when it comes to Queen!
Actually Also talking of George Michael I f*cking hated Wham! I still do although I danced around in public almost naked to Club Tropicana one time thinking it was funny....nuff said on that though!
Anyway even though I wasn't a fan of his solo stuff either I cannot deny how much of an amazing voice he had!
I have a soft spot for his song Fast love, and I was at my pinnacle of baggy pant wearing phony ganger bullshit when that song came out! No shame though still like it, it's a good song! Even his song Freedom I can fully appreciate the message that was saying now I'm older, at the time I was just like "F*ck him! Popstar trying to go solo" paste over everything. I actually like his version of Killer too....I liked Adamski's version of the song, but I hated Seal's solo version, basically cos' he got fame from being the vocalist on Adamski's track, and then f*cked him over.....Such is the way of pop songs :))
Anyway that one song George Michael did with Aretha Franklin Waiting for you or whatever it's called? Even though Aretha Franklin has one of the most amazing voices in Soul, George takes that song the second he comes in! With the "Ooooooooooo somehow I made it to the bitter end..........."......A gay greek dude murks the Queen of soul on one of her own songs! Oof!
I've never really been into Queen. I have respect for them, I think Freddie Mercury was a great frontman, Brian May is a great guitarist, they had a genuinely unique sound, but I only really like a handful of their songs (not that I've heard it all or anything). Stone Cold Crazy is great.

I was the same with George for years. Just another plastic pop star of the 80s who got famous because of his looks.
Then I saw him on the Freddie Mercury Tribute performing Somebody To Love and all that changed. To this day I regard it as probably, other than Queens Live Aid performance, the greatest live performance I've ever seen. The biggest compliment I can give to George is that I doubt Freddie could have done it any better. There's footage of the rehearsal as well and all these musical legends are standing around admiring him.
Never really been into his stuff but I've been an admirer ever since.
And yes, that track with Aretha is a performance and a half! To outperform the queen of Soul... Wow!
I think all men of our age probably thought the same, I know I did. All the girls crazed over him and I was "meh, so what. It aint punk or rock." But now I listen to additional stuff and try to appreciate the artist and the particular song rather than being a fan boy of a certain genre. Although I do have a little laugh to myself thinking about all those girls I know who fancied George and wanted to be with him. Wasted effort after all. :))

Interestingly, some records I know about go from the inside to the outside.
