3D Starstrike II

edited October 2005 in Games
After a lot of practice I came to really like the first Starstrike game, so now I'm having a go at the sequel.

There is one thing that puzzles me though. The section in the game where you enter a giant pentagonal wheel - you shoot off the five pods before the hangar opens and you get in. The instructions then say this:

"To escape from this hanger, you must shoot away the three controllers that operate the exit door. You must be careful in doing this, as the door remains in the position it reaches at the instant when the third door controller is destroyed - you could
end up trapping yourself."

What exit door? There are three things circling an object along with rotating square shapes. I don't see any door. I shoot the three controllers and nothing happens, and I've run out of ideas.

Help me save the world!

The door will be at the far end of the hangar. The instructions are referring to the three switches around this door. The moment you shoot the third one, the door stops opening and closing, so you have to time it so that it's at it's most open position.

Obviously I'm dumb, but I don't see any door there! The problem with describing this is that all the objects are abstract - they are just shapes. But here I go anyway.

When I'm in the hangar, I'm gliding towards some triangular shapes (usually 3) circling an 8 or 10-sided spherical object. There are also some square shapes spinning around. When I shoot the triangular shapes, nothing happens. The shape in the middle does not change in any way. It doesn't stop spinning; it doesn't do anything. Absolutely nothing happens at all, and there is no door, or indeed anything that could resemble a door. By the time I reach the point where the spherical object is I hear a crashing noise and my energy level goes down, and then I find myself back at the start of the descent towards the end of the hangar. This process repeats itself until I totally run out of energy and die. I have played this sequence 40 times, and the same thing happens on each occasion. But I'm going to play it until I work it out.

As I'm sure we all know, it gets really frustrating when you can't work out how to play a game. I had a similar problem years ago with 'Dan Dare' and using the lifts. But I solved it, and I'll get round this one too.

From what you're describing I don't think you're in the hanger - to enter the hanger you have to hit the entrance when the slot (which opens after you shoot the five pods) is horizontal, if you hit the slot at an angle the game skips to the next stage which is getting through the shields - what you'll see is a vertical grid with a diamond shaped hole guarded by rotating square things and tumbling polyhedrons that shoot 6-pointed stars at you, the stars are the only things you can shoot at this stage, you have to dodge through the rotating squares. Then you get another shield to get through, the exact number varies on each planet.

To enter the space station: shoot the 5 pods, when the entrance slot opens move your crosshair to the centre of the slot and press 'D' for dock, your left/right controls now change to rotational controls, match rotation with the station (a la Elite) and in you go....

I think you may have cracked it Zoffy - that makes a lot of sense. Thanks a lot for that, as I thought i was going cuckoo :)

Make sure you save the game with a snapshot near the end - I played it right through a couple of times (take about 2 hours) and got killed right at the end :(

(I assume you're using an emulator, there's no save option in the game)

  • Strangely enough, I was writing a game for the CGC called StarStrike - imagine my annoyance when, just when I was about to 'spectrify' my original DOS version, I discovered that the name had been used already by a 'real' software company back in the halcyon days.
Meh...i'll still enter the CGC... :-/
