RIP Gerd. Only ever saw highlights of him play but in the 18 yard box I don't believe there has ever been a player more lethal.
For all the plaudits Messi and Ronaldo get for their goal scoring exploits, as if it's something new, Gerd was doing the same decades before. 68 goals in 62 matches for West Germany is, frankly, astonishing.

Agreed. Like Jimmy Greaves he played in an era when tackling was proper tackling, not the tickling that goes on nowadays, a defender could literally kicked you around the pitch for 90mins and not even get booked.

Absolutely, couldn't agree more. The current generation wouldn't stand a chance in yesteryear. Don't get me wrong - the brutality defenders got away with, some easily could be for common assault - look how Maradona was kicked to pieces - is better now that it's gone from the game. But those players in todays game would easily be the same level as the current top players.
I get annoyed with the current generation of football fans as they seem to ignore that any footballer existed before Messi/Ronaldo/Lewandowski/etc. Much like many EPL fans ignore that English football existed before the EPL began in 1992.
Here's a controversial opinion - Messi is overrated. By that I mean he is nowhere near the greatest footballer of all time that so many think he is. That accolade belongs to the other tiny Argentinian and I'd easily put another five or six players ahead of Messi. Messi's move to PSG has only confirmed my suspicion that his entire career is devoted to protecting Brand-Messi and he's only in it for the money, fame and being worshipped. Of course he's going to continue to score 60 goals+ a season in that mediocre league. If he'd have moved to the Italian, English or German league and done the same as at Barca then maybe I'd have more respect for him. As it is - for me he's chickened out from truly proving how great he could be.
At least Ronaldo had the balls to go to Juventus. I'd still rather have old, fat Ronaldo though :-)
I too was really saddened to hear about Sean Lock. And shocked also - didn't realise either he had cancer :(
Although thinking about it now, the most recent times I have seen him on telly, he did look unwell...
I think he was an absolutely brilliant comic. He had a unique view on things, and would constantly surpise you with his wonderful timing and deadpan delivery. At other times he could be really mischievous too and seemed to laugh along with himself!
