Its an interesting point you made Moggy. I did try to find some every day person style clothing that young men from the UK would have worn in the 70s. But none of what I could find was what you described, it all seemed far more conservative and all the non-conservative and bright stuff was American. I'd be very interested to see an example if you can find one.

I could have a bash at that as I have too much time on my hands these days and am often at a loose end and will include women too for balance, but as this site won't let me post pictures directly and I'm not interested in joining some kind of photo sharing jobbie it will have to be links only

  • I think most people can post pictures on WOS, even you. All you have to do is use the photo option in the post box. Some images will not work as some sites have taken steps to stop people sharing their photos directly. For that I do use Imgur, but you do not need to use that and I'm sure you could find some representative images to share.

  • And don't forget, in the 70s it was compulsory to look over 30, even when you were still at high school. ;)
    Sod it!

Almost forgot a nice suit of a type that was de rigueur in a lot of places but frankly quite naff in my opinion.
But then I'm the moron who wore a red cheesecloth shirt.

I like your 4th image, but beyond that and the fist image I say the mens style is more mostly bold than bright which is what I remember.

That 4th image is mostly timless, you would have gotten away with that in 1976, 1980, 1985, 1995 and possibly now if not for the crease/seem left and right. The other menswear is very much of its time. It seems shirt fabric and wallpaper designers did double duty in the 70s.

These clothes do not look every day (maybe guys 1 and 3 are), they are like a Roiling Stones wanna be. They also look "tight around the arse", I would not want to squat down in those.

My dad tells me Ben Sherman and Double Two were the must have shirts of the time.

    @ Scottie.

Ben Sherman's were very nice and were part of the standard uniform of Crombie coat, jeans, gents automatic umbrella and DM's for 70's skinheads in some parts of the country.

Double 2 are located not far from me in Wakefield and I remember a local railway bridge used to have the words "Wakefield the home of Double 2 shirts " painted across its span.

Never a fashion shirt more for office types as I seem to remember but well made and still on the go.

It's just come to mind that the poorer skinhead of the era would buy DM look a like Major Domo boots rather than DM's not sure if that brand still exists though.

  • I used to have a couple of Ben Sherman shirts that i wore to my computer training course in the early 90's. I remember my mum taking me to a shop to buy them. One got ripped the first day i wore it. No idea how that happened.

  • There was a Wimpy quite near me up till about 2010. I used to like a burger and chips but their hygiene levels went down. I was tired of asking for fresh cutlery as the ones i got had bits of food stuck to them. I stopped using it. It's now a cafe called the Solid Scot.

  • I used to love Wimpy, and their smoked sausage/Frankfurter they used to sell would never be allowed now!

Never rated them to be honest but at the time it's all there was burger wise.

Only one left in W. Yorks (Huddersfield), hardly surprising.
