  • I was disappointed to miss the chance to see Dune in the cinemas before it disappeared in December, because it was supposedly really worth seeing on the big screen.
So last week I splashed out on the Blu-ray disc in the hope that it's worth it for the rewatchability. And I'm happy to say I really enjoyed it! My youngest (almost) teenage son found it too slow and complex, but his attention span doesn't stretch much beyond the latest action movie fare. Whereas Dune is quite old-fashioned in it's methodical pacing, which is a hallmark of Denis Villeneuve's. But without skimping on the awesome visuals.
I've never read the books, but he's done a good job of adapting (half of) a supposedly very dense novel and making it easy enough to follow.

The one thing I found a little difficult to swallow was the over-emphasis on primitive hand-to-hand combat techniques and the lack of advanced weaponry, in the face of the very obvious other advanced technologies on show. But I presume this is a shortcoming of the 55-year old novel rather than the movie, although I understand that the books outline that computer technology and AI is outlawed, which wasn't clear in the film.

Just finished Only Murders In The Building on Disney+. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez in a rather enjoyable and clever comedy murder mystery. Martin Short is brilliant. The "deaf" episode is incredibly well done.

And a binge of Malcolm in the Middle on D+, which I've not seen since the original airing. IMO the best comedy the US ever produced. On season 7 now and I'm struggling to think of even an average episode, never mind a poor one.

  • There should be a spinoff, Malcolm in the Middle of Lidl.

  • My brother had all the early Marillion picture discs so maybe he is?
  • I have read some of the Jack Reacher books and taught they were entertaining enough, in a gritty and violent sort of way. So had some hopes for the new series, but no. It's bad to the point of being hilarious.
  • We binged the whole series of Reacher over Friday/Saturday, thought it was pretty good.
  • We binged the whole series of Reacher over Friday/Saturday, thought it was pretty good.

Just too generic/stereotypical and dumbed down. The gritty and detailed violence of the books is now some slapstick knucklefights. And Reacher as some sort Sherlock Holmes, only much smarter? Laughable things like the lockup next to the diner area at the police station. :)) I have only watched one episode and will leave it at that, i would only get mad watching more. As much as i hate to say it, the Tom Cruise movies were much better.

How can it be that always when a book gets a movie or series, or a sequel to a good movie is made, it's like the people involved say to each other, hey, let's forget about everything that made the original so good and make our own thing instead? :(
  • Today i mostly been watching this awesome 2 hour Lemmings documentary

  • Binged Dexter: New Blood over the last couple of nights. They redeemed themselves - it was a much, much more fitting send off for the character with a good story, some good bad guys and an unbelievably beautiful setting. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Plus it had Clancy Brown in it. I'm a firm believer of anything he is in automatically makes it 50% better. Brilliant actor.
  • I watched the Sex Pistols film last night The Great Rock and Roll Swindle but it didn't really make much sense. It looked like random shots just pieced together.

That's my brother's all time favourite movie. Shame what happened to it's star though.

Yeah, it kinda feels like mostly a different kind of show now. I'll watch this season (maybe he will be involved at some point), but if it stays with just Prince then I will probably not watch if there are any further seasons,.
    So far, so meh :)

I do and programs such as "Out of town " spring to mind also.
Jack Hargreaves was a stalwart of 60's and 70's tv shows of this type, his best known creation was probably the show called How? made by Southern tv, which started in the 60's and is probably still going in some form or other.

Charlie Higson says his fast show character Bob Fleming is based on Jack Hargreaves.

Yes, I was watching one of the Bob Fleming skits as well. I'd like to see the original clip of Jack Hargreaves coughing.

There is nothing (to my knowledge?) like this on TV anymore. Pity.

  • Yay Mel! That Lemmings video was really interesting. Glad to see our beloved Speccy (and my beloved Amiga 1000 and DPaint) got the mentions they deserve.
  • Anyone interested in making a game should watch that Lemmings video that Mel put up because if you are really paying attention it almost amounts to being a masterclass in most aspects of basic game design (except the actual coding, alas). Topics covered include pixel art design, how much can you get out of 7x10 and animating the result then improving upon its 'realism' and it mentions some aspects of sound creation which provides ideas that you could use for inspiration and even developing cover art and character design for same.

I could go on but I think that I've provided enough to show why I think this is well worth watching if your ambitions include game design and especially if, like me, you got bogged down with creative block and need something to reignite your imagination.

Hats off to Mel for this gem! Thanks a million mate...reaches for sketchbook

Lemmings suffered a bit when it came to the ZX Spectrum version, being completely in monochrome. But otherwise it was a decent conversion.

  • I'm about halfway through season 3 of Enterprise. This season seems to be a serial rather than each episode being a self contained story.
