You can definitely tell when the 3D is "on" or not. The screen gets blurry.

Nvidia did 3d driver support years ago, that supported all the various technologies. Anaglyph, shutter glasses, polarised screens etc.

The problem is that all the technologies that are actually any good are also expensive, so never caught on.
