Any standard joystick will do the trick. It's so called "Atari standard". The same joysticks that work with Atari XL/XE, C64, Atari ST and Amiga.
On Spectrum games you should set "Kempston" on the games' beginning. -

Does ZXDS allow the speed of the Spectrum to be altered i.e. speeded up? Or does it take all the muscle a DS has to emulate the Spectrum at 3.5MHz?

I try to boot ZXDS on DeSmuME emulator, but just get the message "booting, please wait .." and nothing else.
