Elite 128K works on Spectrum 48K without problems and has no protection (but also not the funny "Save commander" cheat). It is like a bugfixed version as the original version was not working on Spectrum 128K.
I loved the game. One of the best! -

Have you tried plugging in the stick and allowing it to be recognised before you fire up the emulator? Number 1 common cause of controllers not working with anything. Other than that, dunno! -
