On 48k/128k hardware (and +2) then a read from a port with no hardware attached returns a mixture of display/attr bytes and $FF, depending on what is on the bus at the time.
On +2a/+3/+3e hardware, it returns $FF every time.

I built Pera Putniks Simple CF interface, It's just a CF connector, a logic IC and an edge connector!!!! oh, and a decoupling capacitor. I use that in a +3e and it works a dream!!!
