I don't know, but surely it's possible to modify ROM to load TAP files and *.z80 files.
I have such a computer and it worx very well.

Hmm...let's say I modify LOAD code to support CF cards or direct attached flash EPROMs and have saved the TZX/TAP/whatever files there...

Well firstly if you're using the in game save facility and it does not use the standard Spectrum ROM routine then a TAP format will not be able to save the data correctly.
