no the smart card will work on any version of the spectrum from the 48k rubber keyboard to the plus 3, i have personality tried it on an issue 4 48k plus and a plus 2B 128k and a harlequin 48k and it worked without fault -

Think there was issue with the RF output being very yellow on some early Spectrums.
