As you've sorted it, I would guess brown = unregulated in / black = ov / red = stabilized 5v out.
Assuming a 7805 (7x05 series) :) , left = in / middle = ground / right = out , I think -

I'm sure I read somewhere that there's another voltage regulator you can get that doesn't require a heatsink, sure it was here somewhere. (Ive drank since so it could be anywhere really!)
